Chapter 7 - The Foundation of a New Life

Six months later.
The Cole estate no longer felt like a guarded fortress. The heavy iron gates remained open during the day, welcoming sunlight, laughter, and the joyful patter of small feet across the polished hardwood floors.
The former east-wing guest suites had been completely remodeled into a charitable pediatric health foundation funded entirely by the Cole family and managed by Sarah Bennett—a place dedicated to providing free medical care, housing assistance, and career placement to single mothers across New York.
Inside the sunlit conservatory upstairs, little Emma—now nearly four years old and running everywhere on unsteady, determined legs—was chasing a bright yellow rubber duck across the tiled floor.
Sarah stood by the French doors, smiling as she watched her daughter dart around the indoor palm trees. She wore a simple emerald green summer dress that brought out the warmth in her skin and the bright, happy light in her eyes.
The door opened behind her.
Strong arms wrapped gently around her waist from behind, pulling her back against a solid, familiar chest. A warm chin rested softly on her shoulder.
“You’re working too hard again,” Adrian murmured into her hair, a rich, contented chuckle rumbling in his chest.
Sarah leaned back against him, resting her hands over his forearms. “I’m just reviewing the quarterly budget for the mother’s shelter downtown. Everything has to be perfect for the ribbon-cutting ceremony tomorrow.”
Adrian turned her gently in his arms, his grey eyes shining with profound affection. He reached into his pocket, pulling out a small velvet box—different from the first one, infinitely more personal.
Sarah’s breath caught in her throat. She froze, looking up at him with wide, disbelieving eyes.
“Adrian...” she whispered.
“Sarah,” Adrian began, his voice deep, steady, and filled with an absolute, unshakeable devotion. “Six months ago, you walked into my library holding a sleeping child and a truth that nobody else dared to speak. You didn't care about my money, my power, or the dangers lurking in my world. You brought honesty, loyalty, and real warmth back into these halls.”
He dropped gracefully onto one knee right there on the conservatory tiles, snapping open the velvet box to reveal a breathtaking, flawless diamond ring that caught the afternoon sunlight like a captured star.
“You brought light into a house built on shadows,” Adrian said, looking up at her with his soul entirely exposed. “Will you marry me, Sarah? Will you and Emma let me spend the rest of my life making sure you never have to carry the weight of the world alone again?”
Little Emma stopped chasing her rubber duck, wobbled over on her chubby legs, and dropped down beside her mother, grabbing the edge of Adrian’s jacket and shouting happily, “Say yes, Mama! Say yes!”
Tears of pure, overwhelming joy spilled over Sarah’s eyelashes. She didn't hesitate for a single second.

“Yes!” Sarah sobbed softly, dropping to her knees and throwing her arms around Adrian’s neck, pulling him into a deep, passionate kiss. “Yes, Adrian. A thousand times yes!”
Emma cheered loudly, crawling over their laps and sandwiching them both in a messy, joyful tangle of hugs and laughter.
