Chapter 4 - The Threat in the Shadows

By evening, the grand estate felt entirely different. The staff had been briefed, security protocols were doubled, and both Vivian and Mason had been removed from the premises under armed guard—sent packing with nothing more than the clothes on their backs and the realization that crossing Adrian Cole meant losing everything.

Inside the private master suite, Adrian sat alone in the dark, a glass of neat bourbon resting untouched on the mahogany side table. The city lights of Manhattan flickered across the horizon through the floor-to-ceiling glass windows, but they offered no comfort. The betrayal cut deeper than any physical wound he had ever suffered.

A soft knock rattled the heavy oak door.

“Enter,” Adrian said.

Victor Reyes, head of security and Adrian’s most trusted remaining enforcer, slipped into the room. He held an encrypted tablet under his arm, his face grim.

“Boss,” Victor reported quietly. “Mason has checked into a private hotel downtown. But before he left, our wiretaps picked up a distress call he made to an unlisted encrypted frequency.”

Adrian didn't look up from his drink. “Whose frequency?”

“Marcus Thorne,” Victor said, the name hanging in the air like a foul odor.

Adrian’s head snapped up. Marcus Thorne was the head of the Brooklyn syndicate—the very rival organization Adrian had spent the last five years trying to crush out of existence.

“Thorne?” Adrian asked, his voice hardening. “What does Thorne have to do with Mason?”

“According to the metadata we decrypted from Mason’s offshore accounts, the money wasn't just for a comfortable retirement with Vivian,” Victor explained, tapping the screen of his tablet. “Mason was heavily in debt to Thorne’s underground gambling rings in Queens. He was being squeezed. Thorne used Mason’s debts as leverage to infiltrate our logistics network, leak our shipping schedules, and position Vivian inside your house to secure legal control of your estate.”

A cold, dark fury ignited in Adrian’s chest. His best friend hadn't just betrayed him out of weakness or romance; Mason had sold him out to their worst enemy for gambling debts.

“Where is Thorne now?” Adrian asked, his voice dropping into a deadly whisper.

“We have a fix on his primary warehouse on the North River docks,” Victor said. “He’s holding a summit with his lieutenants tonight at midnight. They think you’re distracted by the breakup and the scandal.”

Adrian stood up slowly, grabbing his leather jacket from the back of the sofa. He reached into his drawer, pulling out a heavy-caliber Sig Sauer pistol and checking the magazine with practiced, lethal efficiency.

“Get the tactical team ready,” Adrian ordered coldly. “We’re going to pay Mr. Thorne a visit.”

“Boss, it’s a trap. Thorne knows you’re coming if Mason talked,” Victor warned.

“Let him lay his trap,” Adrian replied, walking toward the door with the terrifying certainty of a king walking onto his own battlefield. “Tonight, we end this war once and for all.”
