Chapter 15 - The Deal Preston Wanted

Preston Harrison began talking at 2:15 in the morning.
By 4:40, even the detectives looked stunned.
Nolan listened from the other side of the glass in the interview suite the police had set up temporarily in the mansion’s conference wing.
Rosa sat nearby wrapped in a cream blanket from the guest house, too wired to sleep. Camila had finally drifted off in the next room, clutching her backpack and teddy bear as if someone might try to steal those too.
Inside the interview room, Preston looked broken.
He admitted creating the shell company.
He admitted rerouting domestic payroll.
He admitted processing fake loans in employees’ names.
He admitted planting the jewelry box in Rosa’s cart.
But the biggest revelation came last.
Caleb had not just stolen to cover random debt.
He was trying to raise money before a lender called in a private note secured against his shares in a family venture.
If he defaulted, he risked losing his position, public exposure, and control over a separate investment company he had secretly built using Blackwell family relationships.
So he stole where he thought no one would look.
From the reserve fund.
From payroll.
From workers.
And when Rosa saw him on the archive floor, Caleb panicked.
“He said if Nolan ever opened Arthur’s ledger,” Preston whispered in the room, “everything was over.”
The lead detective asked the question Nolan himself wanted answered.
“Why not just return the payroll once you had the black case?”
Preston swallowed.
“Because by then the money was gone.”
Gone.
Spent.
Moved.
Pledged.
Borrowed against.
Nolan stared through the glass.
All those weeks Rosa went hungry.
All those notices on her kitchen table.
All those excuses.
And the money had already vanished into Caleb’s desperation.
Then Preston said one more thing.
“There’s another account. Not in Caleb’s name. In his assistant’s cousin’s name. That’s where the last reserve transfers landed.”
The detective leaned in.
“Can you prove it?”
Preston nodded.
“Yes. I have the routing records hidden in my cloud drive. I kept them in case Caleb turned on me.”
Of course he did.
Cowards always keep insurance.
The detectives moved fast. A warrant request went out. Digital recovery started immediately.
When Nolan stepped into the interview room at the end, Preston couldn’t meet his eyes.
“You ruined people for him,” Nolan said quietly.
Preston stared at the tabletop.
“I know.”
“No,” Nolan said. “You know numbers. Rosa knew fear. Camila knew what it sounds like when her mother cries in the dark.”
Preston’s shoulders shook.
It did not move Nolan.
Not anymore.
Back in the hall, Rosa looked up as Nolan approached.
“What happens now?”
He answered honestly.
“Now we prove where every dollar went.”
She nodded.
That was all.
No dramatic gratitude.
No sudden trust.
Just a tired woman who had learned not to believe in rescue too quickly.
Then Nolan’s attorney came in with the latest.
The emergency freeze on the newly discovered account had gone through.
But there was a complication.
The account was already being emptied.
By Caleb.
In person.

From a private bank in Beverly Hills.
👉 Preston had just exposed the final account holding the reserve fund money—but Caleb was already at the bank trying to drain it before the freeze could fully hit.
