Chapter 10 - The Fund Meant for Emergencies

The Blackwell employee reserve fund had been Arthur’s pride.
He created it after a longtime groundskeeper lost his home to medical debt. Arthur never forgot the humiliation on the man’s face when he had to ask for an advance. So he built a private reserve.
Quiet.
Unpublicized.
Protected.
It was meant to cover emergencies for estate workers:
medical bills,
temporary housing,
school costs,
family crises.
Nolan had signed annual contributions into it without ever imagining Caleb would turn it into a target.
Now the forensic team dug through reserve fund records while Nolan sat in the study reading every line of his father’s letter.
Arthur had suspected Caleb for years.
Small irregularities at first.
Short-term borrowing.
Inflated reimbursements.
Transferred expenses.
Then larger signs of risk-taking and secret debts.
Arthur gathered evidence instead of confronting him publicly.
Why?
Because Arthur still hoped his younger son would stop.
He never did.
Rosa entered the study carrying tea she clearly did not need to be serving under the circumstances.
Nolan stood immediately.
“You do not work today.”
A flicker of embarrassment crossed her face.
“I know. I just… needed my hands busy.”
He nodded.
That, at least, he understood.
She set the tray down and noticed the papers.
“Reserve fund?”
Nolan looked at her.
“Did Preston ever mention it to you?”
Rosa stared, then laughed once in disbelief.
“No. If I’d known there was an emergency fund, I wouldn’t have skipped meals pretending everything was fine.”
Camila, sitting cross-legged near the window, looked up.
“You skipped meals?”
Rosa closed her eyes.
“Baby—”
Camila’s face crumpled.
Nolan felt something vicious twist in his chest.
He looked back at the records.
The reserve fund balance should have been just over $1.8 million.
Current verified balance:
$94,000.
The room went silent.
His attorney spoke first.
“That amount of depletion cannot be explained by legitimate employee assistance.”
Rosa whispered, “He took that too?”
Nolan’s expression hardened.
“Yes.”
Camila slammed her little hand on the floor.
“That’s everybody’s money!”
Nolan looked at her.
Again, she reduced the whole thing to its moral truth faster than the adults did.
Yes.
That was exactly what it was.
Everybody’s money.
A security guard appeared at the door.
“Sir, your brother wants to speak with you privately.”
Nolan stood.
“No.”
“Sir, he says if you involve the police in the reserve fund, he’ll release information that embarrasses the entire family.”
Nolan’s eyes went flat.
“Then my brother is welcome to test how embarrassed I’m willing to be.”
The guard nodded and left.
Rosa looked uneasy.
“Maybe he means something real.”
“I’m sure he does.”
“Then maybe you should listen.”
Nolan turned to her.
“Rosa, he starved you and stole your name. I am done negotiating his comfort.”
Her eyes filled.
Not with fear this time.
With the kind of relief a person feels when someone finally says the thing she needed to hear.
Then Nolan’s assistant came in with another development.
A woman named Megan Price was on the phone.
She had been Preston’s payroll assistant until three months ago.
She quit abruptly.
And now she said she had copies.
“Copies of what?” Nolan asked.
His assistant swallowed.
“She says she kept backup files in case someone tried to blame her. She’ll only hand them over if Rosa Martinez comes too.”
Rosa went still.
“Me?”
Nolan looked at the clock.
“Set the meeting.”
Then he looked at Rosa.
“If she wants to talk to you, there’s a reason.”
Rosa looked scared.
Camila stood up.
“I’m coming too.”
Rosa shook her head.
“No.”
Camila crossed her arms.
“Megan likes me. She gave me gummy bears when she worked in the office.”
Against all odds, Nolan almost smiled.
Then his face hardened again.
“Fine,” he said. “But nobody goes anywhere without my security.”
Because at last they had something Caleb didn’t know about yet.

A witness with copies.
👉 The missing reserve fund proved Caleb’s theft was far bigger than payroll alone—but a former payroll assistant now claimed she had backup files and wanted to speak to Rosa in person.
