Chapter 3 - The Ambush at the Tracks

"GET DOWN!" Lorenzo roared, tackling Isabella to the mud as a second round whistled through the damp air, tearing through the metal wall behind them.
Bruno barked savagely, diving behind a stack of rusted steel drums.
Lorenzo pulled his 9mm, his mind instantly shifting from stunned husband to lethal tactical operator. He scanned the tree line bordering the elevated train tracks three hundred yards away. A flash of light caught his eye—the reflection of a high-powered scope mounted on a gray SUV parked on the overpass.
"Mason!" Lorenzo shouted into his wrist communicator. "Code Red at the freight yard! I have visual on the target! Ambush in progress, two snipers minimum! Bring the strike team!"
"On our way, Boss! Three minutes!" Mason’s voice barked over the static.
"We can't wait three minutes!" Isabella panicked, crawling low against the brick wall. "They brought six men yesterday, Lorenzo! They're hunting us!"
Two heavily armed men clad in black tactical gear burst around the corner of the freight office, their submachine guns raised.
Lorenzo didn't hesitate. He rolled onto his back, extended his arm, and fired three rapid shots. BLAM! BLAM! BLAM!
The first gunman dropped instantly, hit twice in the center mass. The second ducked behind a wooden crate, returning fire with a wild spray of 9mm rounds that tore through the rusted siding above Isabella's head.
Bruno sprang into action. The black dog launched himself through the air like a missile, his jaws locking onto the second gunman’s arm. The mercenary screamed, dropping his weapon as he thrashed against the dog's fierce weight.
Lorenzo stepped up, bringing his pistol frame down hard across the mercenary's temple, knocking him unconscious instantly.
"Move! To my vehicle!" Lorenzo commanded, grabbing Isabella’s hand while whistling sharply for Bruno.
They sprinted through the rain toward the armored SUV. Bullets chipped the pavement around their feet, but the heavy ballistic glass and reinforced armor of Lorenzo's vehicle absorbed the incoming fire as they dived inside.
Lorenzo slammed the doors, punched the engine ignition, and jammed the accelerator to the floor. The heavy vehicle roared to life, crashing through the chain-link gate just as two more gray SUVs swung into the alley to block them.

"Hold on!" Lorenzo yelled, gripping the wheel.
The armored bumper of Lorenzo’s SUV slammed into the lead pursuer’s front quarter-panel with a violent CRUNCH, shoving the lighter vehicle aside and bursting onto the main avenue just as Mason’s strike team arrived in three black vans, blocking the alley completely.
