Chapter 1 - The Silver Tray

On December 14, Declan Gallagher stood inside the Crystal Room of his ancestral Chicago estate during the annual winter charity gala. At thirty-four, having ruled his family's syndicate for six years following his father Sean’s sudden death, Declan believed he had absolute command over his world. At midnight, a critical summit with the rival Moretti Syndicate in his third-floor private study was set to broker peace or trigger open war. His lifelong friend and underboss, Liam Foley, personally oversaw security and stepped away to clear the room first.

Yet Declan’s survival instincts whispered that something was wrong. His suspicions materialized when an unremarkable housemaid, Norah Jenkins, intentionally slammed into him with a silver tray of champagne. Kneeling to blot the stain, Norah dropped her subservient mask and whispered a chilling warning: his own men were waiting to assassinate him in the study, not the Morettis. She told him to make a scene and follow her. Seizing her arm under the guise of an outraged host, Declan forced her behind the service curtains.

In the secluded service pantry, Declan held his Glock to her ribs and demanded answers. Norah revealed classified details only an insider would know: C4 military explosives were wired beneath the rug at his private drink cart, backed by four silenced gunmen in the adjacent library. Seeing the deadly conviction in her eyes, Declan lowered his weapon and followed her into the estate’s forgotten 1920s bootlegger passageways. As Norah led him silently through the shadows, Declan realized she moved not like a domestic servant, but like a seasoned phantom with secrets that went far deeper than a simple ambush.
