Chapter 10 - The Sanctuary of Home

One year later.
The golden afternoon sun was casting long, warm light across the grassy lawns of the Lake Forest estate.
Near the edge of the lake, a wooden gazebo overlooked the calm water.
One-and-a-half-year-old Hope was toddling across the soft green grass, letting out bell-like giggles as she chased a golden retriever puppy that Eleanor had given her for her birthday.
I sat on a comfortable wooden bench, watching my daughter with a deep, unbreakable sense of inner peace.
My phone buzzed on the table beside me. It was a news alert notification.
"FORMER FINANCIAL EXECUTIVE RICHARD STERLING SENTENCED TO 18 YEARS IN FEDERAL PRISON WITHOUT PAROLE."
I glanced at the headline for three seconds, felt no pain, no anger, and no sorrow, and locked the screen, setting the phone facedown.
His chapter in my life was closed forever. His shadow had completely dissipated, leaving behind only the bright, clear light of my present.
Eleanor walked down the stone path from the main house, carrying a tray with fresh lemonade and fruit. She set it on the table and sat beside me, putting her arm around my shoulders as we watched Hope play.
"She has your smile, you know," Eleanor whispered, watching Hope tumble onto the grass and laugh hysterically with the puppy.
"She has your spirit," I replied, resting my head against my mother's shoulder.
The cool lake breeze blew through the trees, rustling the leaves overhead. Around my wrist, the silver bracelet caught the sunlight, flashing brilliantly—no longer a symbol of lost identity, but a mark of an unbreakable bond, a restored legacy, and a home that would never be taken away again.
"We made it, Waverly," Eleanor said softly, kissing my temple.

I took a deep breath of the fresh, sweet air, watching my daughter run toward us with open arms, her laughter filling the warm afternoon sky.
"Yes, Mom," I smiled, wrapping my arms around my family. "We're finally home."
