Chapter 6 - The Unraveling Fraud

Over the next two weeks, the collapse of Richard Sterling’s life unfolded with terrifying speed.
While I settled into my new life in the Crawford family estate in Lake Forest—a magnificent forty-acre estate overlooking the lake—the legal machinery built by Eleanor went to work.
The state prosecutor’s office officially launched a criminal investigation into Sterling Financial. They discovered that Richard hadn't just forged my signature; he had been running a sophisticated Ponzi scheme, using new investor money to cover the losses of his failed hedge funds.
The luxury car he drove, the penthouse apartment he rented, and the expensive suits he wore had all been funded by stolen money.
On a quiet Tuesday afternoon, while I was sitting in the nursery my mother had spent two weeks custom-designing for her upcoming grandchild, my phone rang.
It was Sarah Lin.
"Waverly," Sarah said, her voice professional and calm. "I am calling to give you an update on the legal proceedings."
"Did Richard agree to the divorce settlement?" I asked.
"He didn't have much choice," Sarah replied. "His criminal defense attorneys advised him to surrender all claims to marital assets, sign a full waiver of parental rights, and agree to an uncontested divorce in exchange for our legal team agreeing not to press civil damages against his remaining personal bank accounts."
I took a deep breath, feeling a massive weight lift off my chest. "So he signed?"
"He signed everything an hour ago," Sarah confirmed. "You are officially a free woman, Waverly. Sole legal and physical custody of your child is fully secured under the Crawford name."
"And the criminal charges?"
"The FBI arrested Richard at his office thirty minutes ago," Sarah revealed. "He is being held without bail on eleven counts of wire fraud, bank forgery, and grand larceny. He is looking at a minimum of fifteen years in federal prison."
I sat back in the rocking chair, resting my hands on my swollen belly, tears of relief quietly slipping down my cheeks.

Three weeks ago, I was standing in a hotel lobby, terrified, abandoned, and penniless, believing I had no future and no family.
Now, the man who had tried to destroy me was behind bars, and I was surrounded by an unbreakable wall of love, safety, and justice.
