Chapter 6 - The Last Dinner

Emergency lights flickered red.
Elena dropped behind a table.
Matteo grabbed her arm and pulled her toward the kitchen.
A struggle erupted in the darkness.
Luca tackled the impostor.
Carlo ran.
By the time power returned, he was gone.
The impostor was arrested.
His identity revealed another layer.
Thomas Vale.
Former private investigator.
Carlo had hired him years earlier to watch Isabella.
He knew Anthony's habits.
His voice.
Enough history to impersonate him briefly once Anthony disappeared.
The real Anthony was found hours later in a warehouse.
Alive.
Bruised.
Furious.
He had been abducted two days earlier.
“I should've known,” Elena said.
Matteo shook his head.
“So should I.”
The ledger survived.
Federal investigators took custody.
Carlo's network collapsed within forty-eight hours.
Arrest warrants multiplied.
Officials resigned.
Businesses were seized.
But Carlo remained missing.
Then Elena received a letter.
Not a text.
A physical letter.
Delivered to Bellavita.
Inside:
ONE LAST DINNER.
JUST FAMILY.
Matteo read it.
“No.”
Elena already knew what she intended.
“He won't stop.”
“He will when they catch him.”
“When?”
Matteo didn't answer.
Carlo had money.
Connections.
Passports.
He could disappear for years.
Elena looked around Bellavita.
“My mother spent twenty-five years hiding from him.”
“Elena.”
“I'm not spending twenty-five more.”
Matteo saw Isabella in her again.
This time he didn't say it.
They made a plan with investigators.
Bellavita reopened for one private dinner.
Empty restaurant.
Hidden surveillance.
Agents nearby.
Elena cooked.
The same dish.
Matteo sat at Table Twelve.
At 9:00 p.m., Carlo entered.
He looked older than he had one week earlier.
Tired.
Cornered.
But still dangerous.
Elena placed the dish before him.
Carlo smiled.
“Isabella's recipe.”
“My recipe now.”
He looked at her.
“That sounds like her.”
“Don't talk about my mother.”
Carlo's smile faded.
Matteo sat opposite him.
“It ends tonight.”
Carlo tasted the food.
Elena watched.
He laughed softly.
“You know what's funny? Everyone thinks this was about money.”
“What was it about?” Elena asked.
Carlo looked at Matteo.
“Being second.”
Matteo understood.
Their father had always chosen Matteo.
To inherit.
To lead.
To represent the family.
Carlo had spent his life building a secret empire to prove he was stronger.
Isabella discovered it.
So he destroyed her life.
“You threatened a pregnant woman because you were jealous of your brother?” Elena asked.
Carlo's face hardened.
“I protected what was mine.”
“You had nothing.”
He looked at her sharply.
Elena continued.
“You had money. Fear. Men who obeyed you because you paid them.”
She stepped closer.
“But nobody loved you enough to stay.”
Matteo whispered, “Elena.”
Carlo stood.
“You sound exactly like her.”
“Good.”
Carlo reached inside his jacket.
Agents moved outside.
Matteo stood.
Carlo pulled out a folded letter.
Not a weapon.
He tossed it onto the table.
“Read it.”
Elena opened it.
Isabella's handwriting.
Another letter.
This one addressed to Carlo.
She read.
Isabella had offered him a chance twenty-five years earlier.
Turn over the records.
Walk away.
Start again.
She had promised not to expose him if he left Matteo and Elena alone.
Carlo refused.
Elena looked up.
“She gave you a way out.”
“Yes.”
“And you spent twenty-five years blaming her for what you chose.”
Carlo's eyes filled with something ugly.
“Your mother ruined my life.”
“No.”
Elena placed the letter down.
“You did.”
Carlo lunged for the ledger decoy on the table.
Matteo blocked him.
Agents entered.
Carlo fought.
Not dramatically.
Not heroically.
Like a desperate aging man realizing fear no longer worked.
He was restrained.
Handcuffs clicked.
Carlo looked at Matteo.
“You're choosing her over blood?”
Matteo looked at Elena.
“She is my blood.”
Carlo was taken away.
Elena watched through the front windows as he disappeared into a federal vehicle.
It should have felt finished.
It didn't.
Matteo stood beside her.
“It's over.”
Elena shook her head.
“No.”
He looked at her.
“Carlo is over.”
She turned toward Bellavita.
“But this isn't.”
Weeks passed.
Matteo testified.
Carlo was indicted on conspiracy, attempted murder, financial crimes, witness intimidation, kidnapping, and corruption charges.
Marco cooperated and received leniency.
Anthony entered witness protection voluntarily.
Before leaving, he hugged Elena.
“You were always Isabella's best work.”
Elena cried.
“So were you family?”
Anthony smiled.
“Every day that mattered.”
Matteo waited outside.
Anthony stopped beside him.
“Don't waste the chance she gave you.”
“I won't.”
“You might.”
Matteo looked at him.
Anthony smiled.
“That's what fathers do. They screw up.”
Then he left.
Bellavita slowly recovered.
Reservations returned.
Employees returned.
The headlines faded.
Elena took control of her inherited forty-nine percent stake.
Her first decision shocked Matteo.
“No more private family rooms.”
“Why?”
“Too many secrets happen behind closed doors.”
Matteo smiled.
“Approved.”
“You own fifty-one percent.”
“I know.”
“So technically you approve.”
“I know.”
“That's annoying.”
“I've been told.”
Their relationship grew awkwardly.
Slowly.
Honestly.
Matteo didn't demand she call him Dad.
Elena didn't.
Not yet.
One evening, she found him alone at Table Twelve.
He was looking at Isabella's photograph.
“Missing her?”
“Every day.”
Elena sat.
“So do I.”
They remained silent.
Then Matteo handed her an envelope.
“What is this?”
“Open it.”
Inside were legal documents.
Matteo had transferred his ownership of Bellavita into a trust.
For employees.
Elena stared.
“You're giving it away?”
“Most of it.”
“Why?”
“Your mother was right.”
“About?”
“Blood doesn't make family.”
He looked toward the staff.
“People do.”
Elena felt tears rise.
“You're changing.”
“Trying.”
“That isn't the same thing.”
“No.”
He smiled faintly.
“But it's a start.”
Elena looked at the documents again.
Then at him.
“Dinner tomorrow?”
Matteo's expression softened.
“Here?”
“No.”
“Where?”
“My apartment.”
He smiled.
“Should I be worried about the food?”
Elena stared.
“Still too soon.”
“Right.”
She laughed.
He did too.
Then Bellavita's front door opened.
A courier entered.
“Elena Rossi?”
“Yes.”
He handed her a package.
No return address.
Matteo stood.
Elena opened it carefully.
Inside was a small wooden box.
Her mother's initials were carved into the lid.
I.R.
Elena's smile vanished.
“I've never seen this.”
Matteo examined the package.
“Who sent it?”
The courier shook his head.
“Woman dropped it at the office.”
“What woman?”
“Older. Wouldn't give a name.”
Elena opened the wooden box.
Inside was a key.
And beneath it, a note written in handwriting she recognized instantly.
Her mother's.
Elena read the first sentence.
Then she stopped breathing.
Matteo looked at her.
“What does it say?”
Elena slowly raised her eyes.
“My mother left one more thing.”
On the back was an address neither of them recognized.
May you like
And beneath it were five words:
FOR MATTEO AND ELENA. TOGETHER.
