Chapter 4 - Isabella’s Last Secret

The hidden panel moved.

Elena raised the first thing she could find.

A rusted metal pipe.

“Easy.”

Luca emerged.

Elena nearly collapsed.

“Matteo?”

“Alive.”

“Where?”

“Moving.”

Anthony frowned.

“How?”

Luca almost smiled.

“Matteo knew Carlo would follow us.”

The confrontation had been staged long enough for police contacts Matteo trusted to surround the building.

Carlo escaped before they closed the perimeter.

But his men didn't.

Matteo emerged minutes later with blood on his collar from a cut above his eyebrow.

Elena ran toward him before thinking.

Then stopped.

Matteo noticed.

Neither knew what they were supposed to do.

Father.

Daughter.

Strangers.

“You're okay?” Elena asked.

“Yes.”

She nodded.

“Good.”

It wasn't an embrace.

But it was a beginning.

They moved to a secure apartment downtown.

Anthony connected Isabella's flash drive to an offline laptop.

Files appeared.

Transactions.

Audio recordings.

Scanned documents.

Photographs.

Carlo's network had survived for decades.

But the newest file had been created only six months earlier.

Elena opened it.

Bellavita.

Carlo planned to force Matteo out and seize full control of the restaurant group.

The poisoning was supposed to accomplish two goals.

Create a public assassination attempt linked to Elena.

Then expose Elena as Matteo's secret daughter.

Matteo understood immediately.

“A scandal.”

Anthony nodded.

“Carlo wanted people to believe you brought an unknown daughter into the business and she tried to kill you.”

“Why?”

“To make your allies question your judgment.”

Elena stared.

“I was just a weapon.”

“To Carlo,” Matteo said.

The words were cold.

“To me, you're not.”

Elena looked away.

She wasn't ready for that.

Anthony opened another file.

Security footage.

Marco.

The kitchen assistant.

Meeting someone.

Carlo's driver.

The proof was clear.

Marco had been paid to contaminate the dish.

But another clip showed something unexpected.

Marco was arguing with Carlo's driver.

He appeared frightened.

“He changed his mind,” Elena said.

Anthony nodded.

“Looks like it.”

Marco had tried to remove the contaminated plate.

But the dinner rush interfered.

Then Elena carried it out.

Matteo had tasted it.

Marco panicked and fled.

“What happens to him?” Elena asked.

“Hospital says he'll live,” Luca said.

Elena exhaled.

Matteo noticed her relief.

“You're worried about someone who nearly helped frame you.”

“He tried to stop it.”

“Late.”

“Still tried.”

Matteo studied her.

“You're like Isabella.”

Elena's expression hardened.

“Don't turn me into her.”

He nodded immediately.

“You're right.”

That surprised her.

Most powerful men Elena had met treated apologies as weakness.

Matteo seemed to understand that sometimes they were the only form of strength left.

They continued examining the files.

Near dawn, Elena found a video.

ISABELLA_E.

She clicked.

Her mother appeared.

Younger than Elena remembered.

Thin.

Tired.

Alive.

Elena covered her mouth.

“If Elena is watching this,” Isabella said, “then the truth has finally become more dangerous than the lie.”

Matteo turned away for a moment.

Isabella continued.

She explained Carlo's threats.

Anthony's protection.

Her decision to disappear.

Then she spoke directly to Matteo.

“I never stopped loving you. But love was not enough to make your world safe.”

Matteo closed his eyes.

“And if Elena chooses never to forgive you, you must respect that.”

Elena looked at him.

He nodded once.

Isabella continued.

“Being her father is not something blood gives you. It is something she must decide whether you deserve.”

The video ended.

Nobody spoke.

Elena wiped her eyes.

Anthony closed the laptop.

“You should rest.”

“I can't.”

Matteo stood.

“I'll leave.”

Elena looked up.

“Why?”

“Because you've had enough forced on you tonight.”

He headed toward the door.

“Matteo.”

He stopped.

Elena struggled with the word.

“Dad” wouldn't come.

Not yet.

“Thank you for not pretending this is simple.”

He looked at her.

“It isn't.”

He left.

For three days, Bellavita remained closed.

The official explanation was a kitchen safety issue.

Privately, Matteo began dismantling Carlo's influence.

Accounts were frozen.

Managers were questioned.

Records copied.

Carlo disappeared.

Elena stayed away from her apartment.

She also stayed away from Bellavita.

On the fourth morning, Matteo called.

“I need your help.”

“With what?”

“Your mother's notebook.”

Elena met him at Bellavita.

The restaurant looked strange empty.

Matteo placed the notebook on a table.

“We missed something.”

He showed her several recipe pages.

Tiny marks appeared beside ingredients.

Dots.

Lines.

Numbers.

Elena recognized them.

“My mother used to tell me they were reminders.”

“They're coordinates.”

Elena stared.

Coordinates led to a storage unit outside Chicago.

The unit had been rented for twenty-six years.

Under Anthony Rossi's name.

Anthony insisted he knew nothing about it.

They opened it together.

Inside were boxes.

Old clothes.

Photographs.

Kitchen utensils.

A child's wooden rocking horse.

And a metal lockbox.

Elena opened it.

Inside was a deed.

Bellavita.

She stared.

“What is this?”

Matteo took it.

His face changed.

The deed transferred forty-nine percent ownership of the original restaurant property to Isabella Rossi.

Signed by Matteo's father.

“Why would he give my mother half the building?”

Anthony examined another document.

“Because she saved him.”

Matteo looked at him.

Anthony explained that Isabella had once discovered an embezzlement scheme against Matteo's father.

She exposed it.

In gratitude, he secretly gave her a stake in the property.

That ownership passed to Elena.

Elena almost laughed.

“I make thirty-eight thousand dollars a year.”

Matteo looked around Bellavita.

“Apparently, you also own half this building.”

“Forty-nine percent.”

“Close enough.”

For the first time since the nightmare began, Elena laughed.

Matteo did too.

It lasted three seconds.

Then Luca entered.

“Problem.”

He placed a tablet on the table.

A news website.

BREAKING: MAFIA HEIRESS LINKED TO ATTEMPTED POISONING.

Elena's photograph filled the screen.

Below it was Isabella's.

Then Matteo's.

Carlo had leaked the story.

Her phone began exploding with notifications.

Matteo's expression hardened.

“He's forcing this public.”

Elena read the article.

Anonymous sources claimed she had recently learned Matteo was her father.

That she demanded money.

That Matteo refused.

That she retaliated.

All lies.

But believable lies.

Then Elena saw the final paragraph.

Police were reportedly reviewing evidence.

Her stomach dropped.

“Can they arrest me?”

Matteo didn't answer quickly enough.

Sirens sounded outside.

Elena looked through the window.

Police vehicles stopped in front of Bellavita.

Officers stepped out.

Matteo moved toward her.

“Say nothing without a lawyer.”

The front doors opened.

A detective entered holding a warrant.

“Elena Rossi?”

Elena raised her chin.

“Yes.”

The detective approached.

“You need to come with us.”

May you like

Then he added the words Carlo had been waiting twenty-five years to hear.

“You're under arrest for the attempted murder of Matteo De Luca.”
