Chapter 7 - The False Report

Victoria Cole returned to the estate shortly after midnight.
She came through the front door alone.
There was no lawyer beside her.
No driver.
No apology.
Ethan was waiting in the foyer where he had found Claire that morning.
The overturned tray had been removed.
The faint smear near the bottom step had been cleaned.
Everything looked polished again.
That somehow made him angrier.
He held the medical transfer form in one hand.
Victoria looked at it once and stopped walking.
"Where did you get that?"
"Locker 318."
Her expression changed so quickly most people would have missed it.
Ethan did not.
"Julian survived the crash."
Victoria removed her gloves.
"For a time."
Ethan's voice went very quiet.
"For a time?"
"He was catastrophically injured."
"You signed a transfer moving him to Hartwell."
"Yes."
"Then you let me bury someone in a closed casket."
Victoria's face hardened.
"You buried remains identified as your brother."
"Were they his?"
She did not answer.
Ethan crossed the distance between them.
"Were they Julian's?"
Victoria looked toward the staircase.
"Not all of them."
Ethan felt the floor shift beneath him even though he had not moved.
The crash had involved a second vehicle, she explained.
A delivery van had gone over the embankment after Julian's car struck the barrier.
The driver died at the scene.
The fire damaged both vehicles badly.
Julian was found alive farther down the slope.
The dead driver was initially believed to be Julian because Julian's watch and wallet were discovered near the body.
Victoria had learned the truth before dawn.
"And instead of correcting the identification, you moved Julian?"
"I moved my son to a specialist facility."
"Under a false name."
"For his protection."
Ethan laughed once.
"From whom?"
Victoria's eyes moved to the hallway camera.
"Not here."
"You lost the right to choose where we talk."
Claire appeared at the top of the stairs holding Grace.
She had heard enough.
Victoria looked up at her.
The coldness returned instantly.
"The baby should not be awake."
Claire stared down at her.
"Neither should a dead man."
Ethan almost turned toward Claire in surprise.
Victoria did not.
"You think you understand this because Julian loved you."
"He did love me."
"That did not make him careful."
Claire descended slowly, never taking her eyes off Victoria.
"Where is he?"
Victoria looked at Grace.
For the first time all day, something like pain appeared in her face.
"I don't know."
Claire stopped halfway down the stairs.
"You expect me to believe that?"
"Hartwell was shut down four months ago."
"Who moved him when it closed?"
Victoria's silence answered.
Ethan stepped closer.
"Marcus?"
"I do not know."
"Peter Lowell?"
A flicker.
There it was.
Victoria knew more about Peter than she had admitted.
Ethan placed the ledger on the marble console table.
"Peter disappeared tonight."
Victoria looked genuinely alarmed.
"What?"
"He left a ledger showing transfers from the Cole Foundation to Northcross Advisory and from Northcross to Hartwell Medical."
"That is impossible."
"Why?"
"Because Peter controlled those accounts."
Claire came down the final steps.
"So now the missing accountant is the thief?"
Victoria ignored her.
"Ethan, you need to call Marcus."
"Owen Price says Marcus sent him to take Grace."
Victoria went still.
"Owen said what?"
Ethan watched her closely.
Her shock did not look rehearsed.
That disturbed him more than another lie would have.
"Why were you in the car that brought Owen to the estate?"
Victoria's eyes narrowed.
"I wasn't."
Malcolm entered carrying the gate still.
"The camera says you were."
Victoria examined the image.
Then she did something no one expected.
She smiled.
"That is not me."
Claire looked at Ethan.
The woman in the passenger seat had Victoria's dark hair, profile, coat, and earrings.
Victoria pointed to her left hand in the image.
"I have worn my wedding ring on this hand for thirty-two years."
The photographed woman wore no ring.
Then Victoria pointed to the ear.
"And those earrings are costume copies."
Ethan remembered an old story about luxury designers duplicating pieces for photographs.
Victoria was vain, but she was also observant.
"Who would dress like you?"
Victoria's expression sharpened.
"Someone who wanted the camera to identify me."
Malcolm enlarged the driver's face.
Peter Lowell was unmistakable.
The passenger was less clear.
Ethan felt the investigation turn again.
At 1:18 a.m., the private DNA laboratory called.
The technician sounded nervous.
"Mr. Cole, we completed the expedited relationship panel."
Claire hugged Grace closer.
"And?"
"The infant is biologically related to you at a probability consistent with an avuncular relationship."
Claire closed her eyes.
Julian was Grace's father.
The relief lasted less than five seconds.
The technician continued.
"But there is an issue with the sample record."
Ethan frowned.
"What issue?"
"Someone accessed your test under an executive override code thirty-seven minutes after the samples arrived."
"Who?"
"The code belongs to Cole Meridian legal administration."
Ethan looked at Victoria.
She looked back at him.
Neither needed to say the name.
Marcus Hale.
The technician added one more detail.
"Mr. Cole, whoever accessed the file also attempted to upload a replacement sample for the infant."
Claire's face went white.
"A replacement?"
"Yes."
"Would it have changed the result?"
"If our chain-of-custody lock had not rejected it, absolutely."
Ethan's phone vibrated.
