Chapter 17 - The Confession

Claire did not scream.

She had learned that panic made other people decide what happened next.

She pulled her arm free and whispered back.

"Where is Grace?"

Melissa's face was barely visible in the red emergency lighting.

"Safe. I didn't touch her."

"Then why are you threatening me?"

"I'm not. Marcus has a second team watching the residence."

Claire's heart stopped.

"How do you know?"

"Because I gave them the address."

Claire stepped back.

Melissa grabbed her hand.

"Listen to me. I gave them a false address."

Federal agents moved through the ballroom with flashlights.

People shouted near the exits.

Melissa pulled Claire behind the stage curtain.

"Marcus thinks I came back to him."

"Did you?"

"Long enough to find where he is."

Claire stared at her.

Melissa looked exhausted.

There was a bruise along her jaw.

"Service basement, room B-14. He's trying to wipe the servers before the agents get there."

Claire reached for her phone.

Melissa stopped her.

"Wait."

"Why?"

"Because he has Peter's original confession."

"Confession to what?"

"Peter helped create the Northcross companies. If Marcus destroys the original records, he can argue every file Peter produced was fabricated to save himself."

Claire looked toward the stage.

Julian was surrounded by security.

Ethan was searching for her.

She raised her hand so he could see her.

Then she pointed toward Melissa.

Ethan reached them in seconds.

Melissa explained everything.

Lena arrived halfway through.

She did not trust Melissa, but she trusted the location enough to send a team.

Room B-14 was empty when agents entered.

One laptop remained on a table.

A progress bar showed files being deleted remotely.

Lena's technician disconnected the network cable.

"Deletion stopped at sixty-three percent."

A side door led into a maintenance tunnel beneath the ballroom.

Marcus had escaped again.

But he left something behind.

A handheld recorder.

Melissa recognized it.

"He used that for leverage."

The device contained dozens of conversations.

Executives.

Lawyers.

Contractors.

Victoria.

Peter.

And one recording from the night before Julian's crash.

Marcus's voice was unmistakable.

"The line has to fail after he reaches Shore Road. Not before. I don't want cameras catching a breakdown in town."

Another man asked whether Julian would survive the hill.

Marcus answered.

"That's the point."

Ethan closed his eyes.

There was the direct evidence they needed.

Lena immediately issued an arrest alert.

Then Melissa asked to play one more file.

It was recorded the morning after the crash.

Victoria and Marcus were arguing.

Victoria's voice was frantic.

"He's alive."

Marcus answered calmly.

"Then we keep him off the record until we know who tried to kill him."

"You told me the crash was an accident."

"That was before the brake report."

"Ethan must know."

"If Ethan knows, the board knows. If the board knows, the press knows. Whoever did this gets a second chance."

Victoria hesitated.

That hesitation had shaped six months of everyone's life.

Then she said the words.

"Move Julian."

Marcus had manipulated her fear.

But she had made the choice.

No one in the room pretended otherwise.

Julian listened without speaking.

When the recording ended, he looked at his mother.

"That's the moment you lost me."

Victoria nodded.

"I know."

At 11:12 p.m., Marcus was spotted leaving a parking garage two blocks away.

Agents closed the exits.

He abandoned his car and entered a pedestrian tunnel connecting two office buildings.

Lena's team followed.

Ethan was ordered to remain at the hotel.

This time he listened.

Claire stood beside him.

"You want to go."

"Very much."

"Good. Stay."

Twenty-three minutes later, Lena called.

Marcus had been arrested without injury.

He carried two passports, cash, an encrypted drive, and a printed copy of the Free Heir Election appendix.

Ethan frowned.

"He knew about it?"

"Apparently tonight."

Naomi checked the trustee system.

Someone had accessed the sealed appendix at 9:02 p.m.

The login belonged to an outside archive administrator.

Marcus had one final objective.

If Claire exercised the Free Heir Election, Grace's voting power would move permanently beyond the Cole family's direct control.

Marcus would lose the leverage he had spent months creating around the child.

Lena asked Marcus why he cared after everything else had collapsed.

He smiled.

"Because none of you understand what Henry's appendix actually does."

Naomi read the document again.

Then again.

Her face changed.

"He's right about one thing."

Claire felt dread rise.

"What?"

Naomi pointed to a cross-reference buried in the final paragraph.

The Free Heir Election incorporated another sealed instrument by reference.

An instrument none of them had opened.

Henry had labeled it Final Stewardship Directive.

Naomi requested the archive immediately.

At 1:06 a.m., the document arrived.

She read the first page in silence.

Then she looked at Ethan.

"Your father didn't create the Free Heir Election to protect Grace from the company."

"Then why?"

May you like

Naomi turned the page around.

"He created it to take the company away from the Cole family entirely."
