Chapter 6 - Under the Cherry Blossoms

ONE YEAR LATER
The warm spring sun shone brightly over the Lake Forest estate, illuminating the lush green lawns and blooming pink cherry blossom trees that lined the private drive down to Lake Michigan.
The old atmosphere of fear, silence, and dark shadows that had once defined the Moretti household was completely gone.
The high iron security gates were still there, but the dark sedans had been replaced by flower beds, walking paths, and a brand-new wooden playground built near the south garden.
Sitting on a colorful blanket under a massive cherry blossom tree was Maya Vance Moretti.
I wore an elegant cream-colored silk dress that caught the spring breeze. On my left ring finger, a brilliant platinum band set with a flawless emerald-cut diamond sparkled in the sunlight.
Four months ago, Rocco and I had been married in a quiet, beautiful ceremony in the estate garden, surrounded by close friends, local community leaders, and the staff who had become our extended family.
Beside me on the blanket, one-year-old Matteo was crawling happily, reaching his small hands out toward a brightly colored plastic ball. He was a healthy, chubby baby with his father’s dark hair and bright, curious eyes.
"Matteo! Don't eat the grass!"
A joyful squeal echoed across the lawn.
Five-year-old Lily came running across the grass, wearing a yellow sundress and brand-new pink sneakers with bright, sparkly Velcro straps that stuck perfectly.
She dropped down onto the blanket beside Matteo, gently pulling the plastic ball away from his mouth and handing him a plush toy bear instead.
"He always tries to eat the green stuff, Mommy!" Lily giggled, kissing her baby brother's forehead.
"He's just curious, sweetie," I smiled, wrapping my arm around Lily’s shoulders and pulling her close.
"Is Dad coming home soon?" Lily asked, looking up toward the main driveway. "He promised we could go on the big boat before dinner!"
"I'm already here, little captain."
A deep, warm voice echoed behind us.
Rocco Moretti walked across the green lawn, looking handsome and relaxed in a navy linen shirt and trousers, his dark jacket slung casually over his shoulder.
The terrifying mafia boss who had once ruled through fear and isolation was nowhere to be seen. In his place stood a man whose face was filled with profound peace, warmth, and absolute devotion to his family.
Rocco dropped down onto the blanket beside us, pulling Matteo into his lap and kissing the top of his infant son's head.
"How was the foundation board meeting, my love?" I asked, leaning over to kiss Rocco's cheek.
"Perfect," Rocco smiled, taking my hand and intertwining his long fingers with mine. "We officially opened three new pediatric care centers in Chicago today. The Moretti Foundation is fully legitimate, transparent, and funded for the next fifty years."
He looked down at Lily, reaching out to ruffle her pale hair. "And how was your day, Security Chief Lily?"
"It was great!" Lily cheered, proudly holding up her arm. "I checked the whole garden! No fake memos, no bad guys, and zero gold pens!"
Rocco let out a deep, booming laugh that echoed across the quiet water of the lake. He pulled all three of us into his broad arms, holding us tight against his chest under the falling pink cherry blossoms.
One year ago, a dark night of deceit, betrayal, and terror had threatened to destroy our lives.

But out of that dark service hallway, guided by the innocent courage of a four-year-old girl, we had built a life filled with truth, warmth, and unshakeable love.
Safe, victorious, and forever home.
