Chapter 3 - The Gathering Storm

Elena Vane froze.

Her throat moved as she tried to swallow, but no sound came out of her mouth. Her hand clutched her purse so tightly her knuckles turned white.

"Rocco... surely you aren't listening to the imagination of a four-year-old child," Elena stammered, her regal composure fracturing into visible panic. "She's confused! She probably saw one of the kitchen staff—"

"Dante," Rocco called out calmly.

From the dark shadow of the service entrance, a giant of a man stepped forward. Dante was Rocco’s personal bodyguard—a silent, scarred veteran who served only Rocco, entirely independent of Caleb Stone’s security division.

"Search the pantry," Rocco ordered.

Dante nodded once, pulled a high-powered flashlight from his belt, and walked into the dark, narrow flour pantry.

Ten seconds passed. The only sound in the hallway was the ticking of the service cart and the rain beating against the high glass windows.

Dante stepped back out into the hallway.

In his gloved hand, he held a sleek, gold-plated Montblanc pen topped with a deep purple amethyst crystal. It was covered in a light dusting of white wheat flour.

Elena backed away until her spine hit the cool brick wall of the corridor.

"It... it must have fallen out of my bag when I was checking the inventory earlier today," Elena lied desperately, her voice rising an octave. "I was in the pantry at three o'clock!"

"The flour pantry was swept and mopped at six o'clock by the night crew, Miss Vane," I stated firmly, my heart pounding with renewed courage. "Chef Henri requires a clean sweep before every major service. That pen wasn't on the floor at six."

Rocco looked at Caleb Stone.

"Caleb," Rocco said, his voice flat and deadly. "Take Elena to the holding room in the lower basement. Lock the door. No phone calls. No lawyers."

"Rocco! You can't do this to me!" Elena screamed as Caleb grabbed her arms, pinning them behind her back. "I am Mara’s sister! I am a Vane! You owe my family everything! Without our political connections, your freight lines would have been seized by the federal prosecutors three years ago!"

"Mara was my wife," Rocco said, his eyes burning with a dark, terrifying flame. "You just left her six-day-old son on a concrete floor next to a sack of potatoes to frame an innocent maid and take control of Matteo's trust fund."

"I did it for the family!" Elena shrieked as Caleb began dragging her down the service stairs. "You're soft, Rocco! You were going to let Mara’s family lose our board seats! I needed leverage over you!"

Her frantic screams faded into the concrete stairwell, silenced by the heavy steel door slamming shut.

The hallway fell quiet once more.

Dante stepped forward, taking the gold pen and placing it inside an evidence bag.

Rocco looked down at me and Lily.

I was still on my knees, hugging Lily against my chest, my body trembling from the terrifying adrenaline rush that had just saved our lives.

Rocco walked over to us. He lowered his huge frame once more, cradling tiny Matteo in his left arm while extending his right hand toward me.

"Get up, Maya," Rocco said softly.

I took his hand. His grip was warm, strong, and unshakeable as he pulled me to my feet.

He looked down at Lily, reaching out one long finger to gently touch her pale cheek.

"You have very good eyes, little one," Rocco murmured, a rare, genuine smile softening his hard features. "And a very brave heart."

"My sneakers make me fast, too," Lily offered innocently, holding up one shoe with the unclasped pink Velcro strap.

Rocco let out a soft, deep chuckle—a sound I had never heard in the eight months I had worked on his estate.

"Dante," Rocco commanded, turning to his bodyguard. "Cancel the rest of the memorial dinner. Tell the guests I have been called away on urgent family matters. Then prepare the master suite in the east wing for Maya and her daughter."

My eyes widened in surprise. "Mr. Moretti... the east wing is for family. We can just go back to our staff quarters in the cottage."

"You and your daughter are no longer staff in this house, Maya," Rocco declared, his voice filled with absolute authority. "Tonight, someone tried to steal my son and destroy your life. Until I find out every single person involved in this plot... you stay with me."
