Chapter 7 - Healing in the Fortress

Over the next three weeks, the high-security penthouse atop downtown Chicago transformed from a sterile fortress into something resembling a home.

Gabriel refused to let Ella leave until Dr. Harris signed off on her physical recovery. She was moved from the office couch into the luxurious east wing master guest suite—a sunlit room overlooking the skyline with vaulted ceilings, plush white carpets, and endless rows of books.

Every morning, before leaving for his early meetings at Ross Global, Gabriel would stop by her room with fresh coffee, pastries from a French bakery on Michigan Avenue, and a stack of financial portfolios for review.

And every afternoon, they would sit by the stone fireplace, talking not just about business, but about things that had nothing to do with ledgers, debt, or cartels.

Ella learned about Gabriel’s childhood—how he had taken over his father’s shipping empire at twenty-two after a brutal turf war, turning a fractured underground family into a legitimate, multi-billion-dollar global enterprise through sheer iron willpower.

And Gabriel learned about Ella—how she had raised her younger brother after their parents passed away, working two jobs through college, sacrificing her own ambitions so Tyler could finish his degree.

One rainy evening, exactly twenty-one days after the attack, Ella was walking across the hardwood floor of the penthouse library without her cane, testing her right leg with cautious steps.

The stitches had been removed two days prior, leaving a pale, jagged silver scar along the outer muscle of her thigh—a permanent reminder of the night her life changed forever.

The door opened quietly, and Gabriel stepped inside, carrying a small velvet box in his hand.

He stopped when he saw her standing by the window, moonlight spilling over her blond hair and cream silk blouse.

“You shouldn't be walking without support yet,” Gabriel said, though his voice was laced with quiet admiration.

“I’m fine, Gabriel,” Ella smiled softly, turning to face him. “The scar is ugly, but the muscle is healing. I walked three laps around the gallery today without wincing once.”

Gabriel walked across the room, stopping just inches away from her. His gray eyes were dark, heavy with an emotion he rarely allowed himself to show.

He raised his hand, gently tracing the line of her cheekbone down to her jaw.

“It’s not ugly,” he whispered. “It’s proof of survival. It’s proof that you refused to break.”

Ella’s breath hitched. She reached up, resting her palm against his chest, feeling the steady, powerful thud of his heart beneath his shirt.

“You saved my life,” she whispered. “And you saved Tyler. I don't know how I’ll ever repay you.”

“You don't owe me anything, Ella,” Gabriel said, his voice dropping into that low, magnetic register that made her knees weaken.

He opened the small velvet box in his hand.

Inside rested a stunning, custom-designed ring—a brilliant, deep-blue sapphire surrounded by a halo of flawless diamonds, catching the moonlight like captured starlight.

Ella’s eyes widened. “Gabriel... what is this?”

“It’s not a business transaction,” Gabriel said quietly. “And it’s not a debt.”

He lifted the ring from the box, took her left hand, and slid it slowly onto her ring finger. It fit with absolute, flawless perfection.

“I didn't bring you into my world to be a partner in a holding company,” Gabriel continued, his eyes locked onto hers with absolute devotion. “I brought you here because the moment you walked through those mahogany doors and bled on my floor, I knew I would never let you walk out of my life.”
