Chapter 5 - The Flame Beneath the Ice

That evening, the victory in the boardroom was celebrated with a quiet, elegant dinner at the estate.
Rain beat a rhythmic, soothing pattern against the floor-to-ceiling glass windows of the main dining hall as the storm outside built in intensity.
Emma sat across from Nathaniel at the long cedar dining table. They had cleared away the formal dishes, leaving only two glasses of rich, red wine and a small blazing fire in the stone hearth nearby.
“You were brilliant today,” Nathaniel said, his deep voice carrying a soft warmth that was usually hidden beneath his rugged exterior. He swirled the wine in his glass, his eyes fixed on her.
“I was just doing my job,” Emma said modestly, though a proud blush warmed her cheeks. “I’ve spent years fixing other people’s logistical mistakes from behind a small desk. It was nice to finally say it out loud.”
“You shouldn't have had to hide behind a small desk,” Nathaniel said softly. “You belong at the top of the table.”
Emma looked down at her wine glass, her heart beating a fast, fluttery rhythm. Over the past three days, the terrifying, mythic figure of Alpha Mercer had vanished, replaced by a man who was deeply protective, insanely intelligent, and surprisingly gentle with her.
“Nathaniel?” she asked quietly.
“Hmm?”
“Why haven't you ever mated?” Emma asked, the question slipping out before she could stop herself. “You’re powerful, wealthy, and handsome. Every pack in the North has tried to pair their daughters with you. Why remain alone for so long?”
Nathaniel set his wine glass down on the wooden table. He stared into the flickering fire for a long moment, the shadows casting dark, severe angles across his jawline.
“Because in our world, people don't look for mates,” Nathaniel rasped quietly. “They look for alliances. They look for land, titles, and political security.”
He turned his pale gray eyes back to her, the depth of his emotion raw and exposed.
“My parents had a political arrangement,” he continued softly. “They hated each other. They lived in opposite wings of this house, screaming at each other behind closed doors, using me as a bargaining chip in their petty pack disputes. I swore when I took over Pinehaven that I would never bring a woman into my life unless...”
He paused, his voice trailing off.
“Unless what?” Emma whispered, leaning forward slightly across the table.
“Unless my wolf recognized her,” Nathaniel whispered, his voice dropping into a deep, primal rasp. “Unless I found someone whose spirit was as fierce as the wild, who didn't fear my darkness, and whose touch made the noise in my head stop.”
Emma’s breath hitched in her throat.
Nathaniel stood up slowly from his seat. He walked around the long table until he stood right beside her chair. He extended his hand to her.
Emma didn't hesitate. She placed her soft hand into his broad, warm palm.
He gently pulled her up to her feet. The space between them vanished.
The heat radiating off his massive body was overwhelming. Emma looked up, her hazel eyes searching his severe, handsome face.
“Your wolf...” Emma breathed, her heart hammering wildly against her ribs. “Did he... recognize someone?”
Nathaniel didn't answer with words.
He reached out, his long, broad fingers wrapping around her waist, pulling her flush against his chest. His other hand cupped the back of her head, tilting her face up.
“He recognized you the moment you looked at me at table nineteen,” Nathaniel growled softly against her lips. “He’s been clawing at my chest to claim you ever since.”
Before Emma could process the confession, Nathaniel bent his head and slammed his mouth onto hers.
The kiss was not gentle. It was a torrential storm of hunger, possessiveness, and raw, unrestrained passion that had been building for months.
Emma let out a soft gasp against his lips, her arms wrapping instinctively around his thick neck, her fingers tangling in his dark, short hair. She opened her mouth to him, kissing him back with a fierce, desperate intensity she didn't know she possessed.
Nathaniel groaned deep in his throat—a low, primal sound of absolute victory. His arms tightened around her waist, lifting her slightly off her feet, pressing her body against his rock-hard frame.
The scent of pine, rain, and heat consumed her senses. For the first time in her life, Emma felt entirely safe, fiercely wanted, and profoundly claimed.
When he finally pulled back to let her breathe, their foreheads rested together, both of them gasping for air in the dim, warm light of the fire.
Nathaniel’s gray eyes were glowing a brilliant, radiant gold—the mark of an Alpha who had found his true mate.
“No three months, Emma,” Nathaniel rasped, his warm thumb stroking her swollen, crimson lips. “No fake bond. No ending contract. You’re mine. Forever.”

Emma smiled through her tears, pressing her cheek against his warm, broad palm.
“I was yours the second you put your coat on my shoulders,” she whispered back.
