Chapter 4 - The Painted Memory

The master suite on the third floor was exactly as Naomi had left it ninety-three days ago.

The high ceilings, the floor-to-ceiling windows overlooking Lake Michigan, the dark mahogany furniture, and the smell of cedar and expensive cologne. Her restoration tools—the brushes, magnifying lenses, and solvent bottles she used to preserve antique oil paintings—were still neatly arranged on the side table near the balcony where she had worked during her quietest hours.

Adrian had preserved it like a museum.

Naomi stood in the center of the room, her coat draped over her arm, watching two female nurses in navy scrubs set up a digital monitoring station near the adjoining dressing room.

“I don't need nurses, Adrian,” Naomi said as Adrian stepped into the room, having removed his tie and unbuttoned his collar. “I am seven weeks pregnant, not invalid.”

“Dr. Thorne recommended bed rest until your blood pressure stabilizes,” Adrian replied smoothly, nodding to the nurses, who promptly finished their setup and exited the room, closing the heavy double doors behind them.

Once they were alone, the silence returned—heavy, suffocating, and charged with three years of unspoken words.

Naomi walked over to the balcony glass, staring out at the grey, churning waves of Lake Michigan. “How long are you keeping me here?”

“Until it’s safe.”

“Which means never,” she replied, turning to look at him. “Because in your world, it is never safe. There is always another rival, another indictment, another threat. That’s why I left, Adrian! I couldn't live inside a golden cage while you pretended to be a normal businessman by day and a ghost by night!”

Adrian walked toward her slowly. He didn't stop until he was standing less than a foot away. The heat radiating from his body was intoxicating, a familiar temptation that had kept her trapped in his orbit for three years.

“You didn't leave because of the danger, Naomi,” he murmured, his dark eyes searching her face. “You left because you thought I didn't care.”

Naomi’s breath hitched. She pulled her chin up, refusing to break eye contact. “You made it very clear where I stood in your life. I was the polished wife you brought to charity galas to show the city that Adrian Vale had a soft side. But when the doors closed, you locked yourself in your study. You kept secrets. You left in the middle of the night and came back with blood on your hands, telling me to ‘not worry about it.’”

“I kept you clean!” Adrian said, his voice finally rising, a rare flash of raw passion cracking through his icy facade. “I kept you separated from the filthy reality of what it takes to keep this empire standing! Every drop of blood on my hands was spilled so no one would ever dare look at you with malice!”

“I didn't want to be clean, Adrian!” Naomi yelled back, tears finally stinging the corners of her eyes. “I wanted to be your wife! I wanted the truth! I would have stood beside you in the mud if you had just let me in!”

Adrian froze.

Her words hung in the air between them, striking him with the force of a physical blow. His dark eyes flickered with something profound—a mix of regret, realization, and a desperate, terrifying hunger.

He reached out, his long fingers gently catching a stray tear as it spilled over her eyelash. His thumb brushed against her cheekbone, warm and surprisingly gentle.

“You want the truth, Naomi?” he whispered, his voice hoarse. “The truth is that the night of the gala, when you told me you were leaving, I went to Moretti’s headquarters in South Chicago alone. I pulled a gun on three of his captains because they had spoken your name in a wiretapped room.”

Naomi’s heart hammered violently against her ribs. “You… what?”

“I threatened to burn the city to the ground if anyone touched you,” Adrian murmured, his face lowering until his lips were inches from hers. “I let you walk away three months ago because I thought I was protecting you from my dark world. But now you carry my child. And I will burn every enemy I have before I let anyone take either of you away from me.”
