Chapter 5 - Shadows over Chicago

The next morning, news of Rhett Moretti’s actions reached the South Side.

In a dimly lit warehouse near the river, Leo Castiglione—the ruthless head of the Castiglione crime family—sat at a long wooden table, listening to a report from one of his lieutenants.

"Moretti’s men took Clara Carter from her house last night," the lieutenant reported nervously. "And they beat her husband half to death. Boyd Carter is in the hospital."

Leo Castiglione narrowed his cold, yellow eyes. "Clara Carter? The maid who works his estate?"

"Yes, boss. But there's more. Her daughter, Lena, came back from Pennsylvania four days ago. She was working in the master suite yesterday morning when Moretti found her."

Leo slammed his fist onto the table, making the whiskey glasses rattle. "The girl from the diner explosion three years ago?"

"The same one. She survived the blast. And word from inside the Moretti house says Rhett has cleared out the entire guest wing for her and her mother. He’s keeping her in his private quarters."

Leo let out a dark, cruel laugh. "Rhett Moretti has always been arrogant. He thinks he's untouchable. But he carries guilt over that diner blast. He feels responsible for the civilians who got hit."

Leo stood up, buttoning his leather coat. "If Moretti cares about that girl, she’s his weakness. Find out where she goes, who she sees. If we take her, we can force Moretti to surrender the South Side docks."

"What about her father?" the lieutenant asked. "Boyd Carter?"

"Pay his hospital bill," Leo ordered with a malicious grin. "A bitter, broken man with a grudge against his daughter is the easiest weapon to use."
