Chapter 10 - The Unbroken Dawn

Spring arrived early in Chicago that year.

The heavy snow melted away, revealing bright green grass and blooming tulips along the Gold Coast.

The Moretti estate was peaceful. The iron gates remained, but the heavy, oppressive silence that had once filled the mansion was gone, replaced by the warm sounds of life.

Clara Carter stood in the sunlit kitchen, wearing a comfortable silk cardigan, helping Vera prepare morning tea. Her shoulder had fully healed, and for the first time in her life, her eyes were free from the shadow of fear.

Upstairs, in the master suite, the high floor-to-ceiling windows were thrown wide open, letting in the fresh, warm breeze from Lake Michigan.

Lena stood before the long mirror, wearing a stunning dark emerald dress that complimented her pale skin and dark hair. Her sleeves were short, exposing her right forearm completely.

The pale, neat surgical scars were still there, shining softly in the morning light.

A pair of strong, familiar arms wrapped around her waist from behind. Rhett leaned down, pressing a soft kiss to her neck, his hands resting gently over hers.

He looked at her reflection in the glass, his eyes dark with deep, unyielding devotion.

"You aren't wearing long sleeves today," Rhett noted softly, a warm smile touching his handsome lips.

Lena looked at her reflection, then down at her arm, touching the pale lines with her thumb.

"I used to think these scars were a mark of what I lost," Lena said softly, turning in his arms to look up into his dark, fierce eyes. "Now I know they were just the path that brought me to you."

Rhett leaned down, pressing his forehead against hers. "You saved me, Lena. You walked into this house carrying the weight of the world, and you gave me back my humanity."

"We saved each other," she whispered, raising her hand to gently touch his cheek.

Outside, the sun rose high over Lake Michigan, painting the sky in brilliant shades of gold and blue.

The dark king of Chicago had found his queen—not in a palace of wealth or power, but in a brave young nurse who showed him her scars and taught him how to love without fear.
