Chapter 4 - Shadows in the Storm

A torrential rainstorm battered the glass windows of the Voss estate by eight o'clock that evening. Lightning flashed across the sky, casting long, dramatic shadows across the long corridors of the master suite.
Thea stood near the fireplace in the private sitting room, watching the crackling flames jump across the oak logs. She wore a soft gray cashmere sweater and jeans, feeling the heavy burden of the past forty-eight hours finally starting to lift from her shoulders.
The sound of soft footsteps made her turn around.
Lachlan walked into the room holding two mugs of hot chocolate. He wore a relaxed white linen shirt with the sleeves rolled up to his elbows, revealing his strong, corded forearms.
"You should be resting," Lachlan said gently, handing her one of the mugs.
"I can't sleep," Thea admitted, taking a slow sip. "Everything moved so fast today. Your grandmother, your uncle... it feels like I'm living inside a movie."
Lachlan walked over to the fireplace, leaning his elbow against the stone mantelpiece, staring into the flames. "It was a dangerous game, Thea. I brought you into the middle of a war without giving you a choice."
"I had a choice, Lachlan," she said softly, stepping closer to him. "I chose to stay."
He turned his head to look at her. The golden light of the fire danced across the sharp contours of his face, making his gray-blue eyes look remarkably deep and breathtakingly handsome.
"Why?" he whispered. "Why did you stay after you found out I lied to you on our wedding night?"
Thea looked down at her hands, her heart pounding against her ribs like a trapped bird.
"Because when you looked at me without those dark glasses," she confessed, her voice barely above a breath, "I didn't see a billionaire mobster or a ruthless CEO. I saw a man who was fighting for his life in a house full of snakes. And for the first time in my life, I felt like someone actually needed me for who I was, not for what I could give them."
Lachlan set his mug down on the mantelpiece. He reached out, his long, warm fingers gently cupping her jawline, lifting her face up so her eyes met his.
"I don't just need you, Thea," Lachlan murmured, his voice thick with an intense, unyielding emotion. "I admire you. I respect you. And for the last three weeks, watching you from behind those dark glasses... I've been falling completely in love with you."
Thea’s breath caught in her throat. "Lachlan..."

Before she could say another word, he leaned down and pressed his lips against hers—a deep, passionate, and fiercely tender kiss that consumed every doubt, every fear, and every secret that had kept them apart.
Thea wrapped her arms around his neck, pulling him closer, melting into his warmth as the storm raged on outside the window.
