Chapter 8 - The Aftermath and the Unspoken Truth

The dust settled over Lake Forest slower than the police sirens faded into the damp Chicago night. For three days, the Duca estate was a revolving door of federal investigators, forensic accountants, and legal teams untangling the intricate corporate web Ethan Cole and his conspirators had woven. By the end of the week, the indictments were locked, public disclosures cleared Lorenzo’s name of the fraudulent charges, and the shadow that had hung over the Duca family for years was finally lifted.

Bianca Romano and her co-conspirators were transferred to federal holding facilities awaiting trial. The Duca household, once heavy with ghosts and guarded paranoia, felt lighter, as if the oxygen could finally reach every corner of the grand rooms.

Yet, despite the chaos being over, an awkward, electric silence settled between Lorenzo and me.

The ninety-day trial period specified in Rosa’s eccentric matchmaking contract was technically still running its course. We had survived assassins, corporate conspiracies, and lethal betrayals, but we hadn't actually talked about us.

On a quiet Sunday afternoon, I found myself in the estate's massive professional kitchen, flour dusted across my apron, kneading a batch of dough for cinnamon pastries. The rhythmic thump of my hands against the wooden counter was the only sound in the room until heavy footsteps echoed on the tile.

I didn't need to turn around to know who it was.

Lorenzo walked in, leaning his massive frame against the doorframe, his sleeves rolled up to reveal his scarred forearms, watching me with quiet intensity.

“You’re still here,” he said softly, as if he still couldn't quite believe it after everything that had happened.

I paused, wiping a flour-dusted hand across my forehead, leaving a white smudge just above my eyebrow. I turned to face him, leaning my hip against the counter.

“Where else would I go? I have a bakery in Milwaukee to run eventually, and apparently, someone in this house needs to teach you how to laugh without Rosa mocking you,” I teased, though my voice carried a nervous tremor.

Lorenzo pushed off the doorframe and walked slowly toward me. Every step he took consumed the space between us until he was standing right in front of me, towering over my plus-size frame, radiating heat and an overwhelming, steady presence.

“The federal agents left the final asset clearance documents this morning,” Lorenzo said, his voice dropping lower, vibrating with deep sincerity. “Your father’s name has been fully cleared of any fraudulent debt. The bakery in Milwaukee is entirely yours, free and clear, with zero encumbrances.”

I stared up at him, my heart doing a familiar, terrifying flip. “And the Duca estate?”

Lorenzo reached out, his large, rough hand gently tracing the line of flour dust across my forehead, his thumb lingering softly against my cheekbone. His touch was so tender, so completely at odds with his intimidating size and reputation, that my breath hitched.

“The agreement was ninety days,” Lorenzo murmured, his dark eyes locked onto mine with fierce, unyielding devotion. “Today is day thirty. But the keys to this house... and the keys to everything else I am... were yours the moment you grabbed my tie and nearly strangled me in the foyer.”

Tears stung the corners of my eyes, but I smiled, reaching up to rest both my hands against his wide, solid chest. “Took you long enough to admit it, Duca.”

He let out a low, gravelly chuckle, wrapping his massive arms securely around my waist and pulling me flush against his chest, lifting my feet slightly off the floor as if I weighed nothing at all. And right there in the sunlit kitchen, surrounded by flour and the scent of sweet pastry dough, we kissed—deep, honest, and completely fearless.
