Chapter 7 - The Final Stand in the Vault

With Bianca neutralized and the primary wave of mercenaries disoriented by the unexpected defense, Lorenzo and I didn't waste a second. We dragged Bianca’s unconscious form into a secure holding closet, locked it tight, and moved with ruthless efficiency through the back corridors toward the underground communications hub.
The estate's smart-grid system was being controlled remotely from the subterranean archive vault—the very place where my father’s financial records had been uncovered. If Ethan Cole or his remaining inner-circle loyalists managed to wipe the encrypted drives, all proof of their corporate conspiracy would vanish into the digital ether, leaving the Duca family legally vulnerable and framing Lorenzo for crimes he never committed.
We reached the heavy steel vault door at the end of the lower sub-level hallway. The electronic keypad was dead, fried by an electromagnetic pulse charge. But the manual override wheel was spinning freely.
“They’re inside,” Lorenzo muttered, his face hardening into an expression of cold, terrifying resolve. He gripped the heavy titanium wheel with both hands, his massive muscles straining as he forced the heavy vault door outward with a deafening groan of tortured metal.
As the door swung wide, a bright halogen light spilled out from the vault interior. Standing by the central terminal, furiously typing commands into the override console, was none other than Ethan Cole.
He looked up, his sleek suit rumpled, sweat beading on his forehead, looking like the pathetic, calculating coward he had always been. When he saw Lorenzo towering in the doorway—and then saw me standing right beside him holding a heavy iron wrench I had picked up along the way—Ethan’s face went chalk white.
“Amelia?” Ethan stammered, backing away from the console. “What... what are you doing with him? He’s a monster! He’s going to get you killed!”
“The only monster I see is the one who spent two years telling me I took up too much space,” I replied, stepping past Lorenzo into the vault, my voice echoing off the concrete walls with absolute, unshakeable power. “You engineered my father’s debt, Ethan. You tried to use my bakery as a laundering front, and you thought I’d be too weak, too insecure, and too clumsy to ever figure it out.”
Ethan’s eyes darted frantically toward the desk, where a small backup pistol lay resting beside a coffee cup. He lunged for it with desperate speed.
Before Ethan’s fingers could even brush the grip of the gun, Lorenzo moved like a freight train. He crossed the distance of the room in two massive strides, grabbed Ethan by the lapels of his expensive designer suit, and lifted him completely off the floor with one hand, slamming him hard against the concrete-reinforced wall.
Ethan choked out a desperate gasp, his legs kicking uselessly in the air as Lorenzo’s massive hand clamped around his throat, holding him suspended effortlessly.
“You touched what is mine,” Lorenzo whispered, his voice dropping to a terrifying, deathly quiet register that made the air in the room freeze. “You brought violence into her home. For that, there is no exit clause.”
“Lorenzo—wait,” I said softly, stepping forward and placing my hand gently on his massive, corded forearm.
Lorenzo paused, his dark eyes shifting down to look at me, the unbridled fury in his gaze slowly yielding to the anchor of my touch.
“Don’t dirty your hands on a parasite like him,” I said calmly, looking straight into Ethan’s terrified, bulging eyes. “Let the federal indictments we just downloaded onto this flash drive do the work. Let him face a courtroom, a bankruptcy judge, and a prison cell where nobody cares about his tailored suits.”
Lorenzo held Ethan suspended for one agonizingly long second, letting the fear hollow out whatever dignity the man had left. Then, with a disgusted flick of his wrist, Lorenzo hurled Ethan across the room. Ethan crashed into a filing cabinet, sliding down into a pathetic heap on the floor, gasping for air.

Within minutes, sirens began wailing in the distance. Federal marshals and local authorities, tipped off by Marco’s encrypted backup protocols, breached the estate gates from the outside, swarming the lower level to secure the perimeter and take Ethan Cole and his surviving operatives into federal custody in chains.
The storm had broken. And standing amidst the ruins of the underground vault, surrounded by shattered tech and federal agents, Lorenzo turned to me, his massive frame shielding me from the chaos, as if ensuring that the world outside could never touch me again.
