Chapter 6 - The King and His Queen

One year later.
The summer sun shone brightly over the private courtyard of the Vance Estate in Lake Forest—the very same suburb where Genevieve’s father had once lived, but transformed now into a grand, private sanctuary surrounded by towering oak trees and high stone walls.
The air was filled with the sweet scent of blooming white roses and fresh ocean breeze drifting off the lake. Soft string quartet music drifted across the immaculate green lawns, where two hundred guests—a select group of high-level shipping executives, international diplomats, and trusted allies of the Vance family—sat in white wooden chairs.
At the front of the courtyard, standing beneath an archway of white orchids and silver ribbon, was Matteo Vance.
He looked impossibly magnificent in a dark blue, bespoke tuxedo, his dark hair neatly styled, his storm-gray eyes fixed entirely on the double oak doors at the end of the long stone aisle. Beside him stood Vane, looking uncomfortable but proud in a matching dark suit.
The string quartet shifted into a rich, sweeping melody.
The oak doors opened.
Genevieve stepped into the sunlight.
She took everyone's breath away. Her wedding gown was a masterwork of modern elegance—a sleek, off-the-shoulder gown of heavy ivory satin that hugged her curves before spilling into a long, dramatic train that glided over the stone path. She wore no heavy veil this time, only a delicate pearl comb in her dark, cascading hair, and around her neck sat a single, flawless sapphire pendant that Matteo had given her on their anniversary.
She walked down the aisle alone, her head held high, her face glowing with radiant, absolute joy. She didn't need anyone to give her away. She was Genevieve Hayes—head of Hayes Freight, co-commander of the largest shipping network on the Great Lakes, and a woman who ruled her own destiny.
As she reached the altar, Matteo stepped down to meet her. He took her soft hand in his broad, warm grip, lifting it to press a soft kiss against her knuckles before leading her up the steps beside him.
The officiant, an old family friend who had known Matteo’s father, smiled at the couple.
"We are gathered here today," the officiant began, his voice echoing warmly across the sunlit courtyard, "not merely to join two lives, but to celebrate a bond forged in trial, proven in courage, and sealed in absolute loyalty."
Genevieve looked into Matteo’s eyes, her heart full to bursting.
When the time came for vows, Matteo turned to face her, taking both of her hands in his. He didn't read from a card or a prepared paper. He looked right into her eyes, his deep voice carrying a raw, absolute power that made every guest fall completely silent.
"Genevieve," Matteo said softly. "One year ago, you ran into my world bleeding, soaking wet, and hunted by wolves. You asked for shelter. I gave you a door. But in return, you gave me something I had spent my entire life without—a home."
He gently squeezed her hands, his eyes burning with intense devotion. "I promise to stand between you and every shadow in this world. I promise to protect your company, your honor, and your heart with everything I am. My guns are yours. My ships are yours. My life is yours. Forever."
Tears of pure happiness glittered in Genevieve’s eyes as she smiled up at him.
"Matteo," Genevieve said, her voice clear and ringing with absolute devotion. "I spent my life trying to fit into a world of safe, pretty lies. When everything fell apart, I ran into the arms of the most dangerous man in Chicago—and found the safest place on earth. You didn't just save me; you taught me how to fight for what was mine."
She reached up, gently touching his cheekbone. "I give you my trust, my love, and my empire. Where you go, I follow. What you fight, I fight. You are my compass, Matteo, and I am yours."
"By the power vested in me," the officiant announced, a broad smile on his face, "I now pronounce you husband and wife. Matteo, you may kiss your bride."
Matteo didn't hesitate. He pulled Genevieve into his arms, lifting her slightly off her feet as he claimed her lips in a deep, passionate kiss that sent a roar of applause and cheers erupting from the crowd.
Later that evening, as the stars came out over Lake Michigan, a grand reception was held on the sweeping stone terrace overlooking the water. Glass lanterns hung from the trees, throwing warm, flickering light over tables filled with fine wine, champagne, and laughter.
Genevieve stood near the balustrade, leaning back against Matteo’s broad chest as his arms wrapped securely around her waist, resting his chin on her shoulder. They watched the distant lights of a Hayes-Vance cargo freighter slowly gliding out onto the dark lake, heading toward the open horizon.
"What are you thinking about, Mrs. Vance?" Matteo murmured into her ear, his warm breath tickling her neck.
Genevieve reached down, her fingers lacing through his, feeling the cool platinum band that now rested on his finger, matching her own simple, elegant ring.
"I was thinking about forty-eight thousand dollars," Genevieve said softly, a subtle, beautiful smile touching her lips.
Matteo chuckled, a low, rumbling sound against her back. "Is that so?"
"Yes," Genevieve said, turning in his arms to wrap her hands around his neck, looking up into the storm-gray eyes that had become her whole world. "Preston thought forty-eight thousand dollars could buy him an empire. But he didn't realize that true loyalty, real power, and real love... are completely priceless."
Matteo smiled—that rare, breathtaking smile that belonged only to her—and pulled her close against his heart.

"You're right, my queen," Matteo whispered, kissing her softly under the starlight. "Priceless."
And as the music played into the warm summer night, Genevieve Hayes Vance held her king tight, knowing that no matter what storms the future might bring, they would rule the tides together forever.
