Chapter 4 - The Boardroom Strike

By nine o'clock the following morning, the rain had cleared, leaving the glass skyscrapers of downtown Chicago gleaming under a crisp, pale autumn sky.

The high-rise headquarters of Hayes Freight & Harbor overlooked the metallic blue expanse of Lake Michigan. In the executive board room on the forty-fifth floor, a heavy, tense atmosphere hung over the massive glass table.

Harrison Whitmore sat at the head of the table, looking every bit the refined civic titan in a bespoke navy suit, though dark circles under his eyes betrayed his sleepless night. Beside him sat Preston, wearing an expression of arrogant, barely concealed triumph. Eight senior board members, three corporate attorneys, and several major shareholders sat around the table, whispering nervously.

"Ladies and gentlemen," Harrison said, raising a hand to quiet the room. "Thank you for attending this emergency session on such short notice. As you know, yesterday was supposed to be a day of celebration for my family and the Hayes family."

He forced a mournful, solemn sigh, dabbing at his eye with a linen handkerchief.

"Tragically, Genevieve... poor Genevieve... suffered a severe psychological collapse just moments before the ceremony," Harrison continued, his voice dripping with false sympathy. "The grief of losing her father has finally proven too much for her young mind to bear. She fled the cathedral in a state of deep psychosis."

Gasps rippled around the table. Several older board members shook their heads pityingly.

Preston leaned forward, placing a thick stack of papers on the center of the table. "Because of her current mental state, Genevieve signed a full management proxy over to Whitmore Logistics late last week. We are here today to officially ratify that transfer, ensuring that Hayes Freight remains stable during this difficult time."

"Is the proxy notarized?" one of the independent shareholders asked cautiously.

"Fully notarized and witnessed," Preston lied smoothly, sliding a pen toward the corporate secretary. "If you'll all just sign off on the transition schedule, Whitmore Logistics will assume operational control of Pier 14 through 18 effective noon today—"

The heavy double doors of the boardroom suddenly burst open.

The loud impact made three board members jump out of their seats.

Genevieve Hayes walked into the room.

She was breathtaking. She wore a sharp, double-breasted cream suit that accentuated her slender frame, her dark hair styled into a flawless, high-fashion chignon. Her makeup was striking—bold red lipstick, sharp eye liner, her face completely free of grief or exhaustion. She looked like a queen stepping up to claim a throne.

And walking right beside her, his massive shoulder nearly brushing hers, was Matteo Vance.

Behind them stood Vane and four broad-shouldered security officers in immaculate black suits, instantly sealing the exit doors behind them.

The entire boardroom fell dead silent. Harrison’s face turned the color of ash. Preston half-rose from his chair, his jaw hanging open in utter shock.

"Genevieve?" Preston stammered, his polished composure shattering into a thousand pieces. "What... what are you doing here? You're supposed to be—"

"In a psychiatric facility?" Genevieve interrupted, her voice ringing clear, powerful, and completely steady across the room. She walked down the center of the table, her high heels clicking like precise, lethal strikes against the hardwood floor. "I'm sorry to disappoint you, Preston. My sanity is intact."

"This is an private board meeting!" Harrison bellowed, recovering his temper and slamming his palm onto the table. "You have no standing here, Genevieve! You signed over your proxy!"

"I didn't sign anything, Harrison," Genevieve said coldly, stopping right at the head of the table—opposite Harrison.

Matteo stepped behind her, pulling out the grand leather master chair—the very chair Thomas Hayes had sat in for twenty years. Genevieve sat down smoothly, crossing her legs, resting her hands on the polished glass surface.

Matteo stood right beside her chair, his broad frame towering over the table, his storm-gray eyes locking onto Harrison with silent, predatory hatred.

"What is he doing here?" Preston demanded, pointing a trembling finger at Matteo. "This is Matteo Vance! He's a mobster! Members of the board, this man is a criminal! Genevieve has been kidnapped by the Vance Syndicate!"

Matteo didn't draw a weapon. He didn't yell. He simply reached into his jacket, pulled out a thick leather binder, and tossed it onto the middle of the table. It slid across the glass, stopping right in front of the corporate secretary.

"That binder contains the forensic handwriting analysis of the proxy document Preston Whitmore attempted to file three hours ago," Matteo said, his baritone voice filling every corner of the vast room. "The signature was forged by a disgraced former state notary currently on Harrison Whitmore's payroll."

The board members gasped, leaning forward to inspect the binder.

"That's a lie!" Preston shouted, his face flushing deep red.

"Page twelve of that binder," Genevieve added, her eyes fixed entirely on her former fiancé, "contains the audio transcript and digital recording from the service corridor of St. Alder Cathedral yesterday afternoon."

Harrison went completely rigid. His hands began to visibly shake against his navy trousers.

"A recording?" the lead shareholder asked, looking between Genevieve and Harrison. "What recording?"

Genevieve leaned forward, resting her chin on her laced fingers, her red lips curving into a terrifying, triumphant smile.

"The recording where Preston Whitmore boasts that it cost forty-eight thousand dollars to cut my father's brake lines," Genevieve announced clearly.

A collective shout of horror exploded in the boardroom. Two board members stood up in shock, staring at Harrison and Preston as if they were monsters.

"This is absurd!" Harrison screamed, standing up so fast his chair fell backward onto the floor. "This is a fabrication! A setup by the Vance family to steal this company!"

"The Federal Bureau of Investigation didn't think it was a fabrication, Harrison," Matteo said smoothly, checking his platinum wristwatch. "They listened to the audio file two hours ago. In about thirty seconds, the elevator doors outside this room are going to open."

Right on cue, a sharp chime echoed from the outer hallway.

The glass doors of the boardroom were pushed open by four federal agents in blue jackets, accompanied by two armed U.S. Marshals.

"Harrison Whitmore? Preston Whitmore?" the lead agent announced, pulling a pair of handcuffs from his belt. "You are under arrest for conspiracy to commit murder, corporate fraud, and federal wire tampering."

Preston collapsed back into his chair, all the color drained from his face, looking like a ghost. Harrison tried to speak, tried to invoke his political connections, but a Marshal grabbed him by the arms, forcing his hands behind his back and snapping the steel cuffs into place.

As the agents dragged Preston past Genevieve’s chair, he looked at her with wild, begging eyes. "Genevieve... please... it was my father's idea! I loved you! Please help me!"

May you like

Genevieve didn't flinch. She looked at him with cool, absolute indifference.

"Forty-eight thousand dollars, Preston," she whispered as he was hauled away. "That's all it cost to ruin your life."
