Chapter 15 - THE WOMAN AT TABLE TWELVE

Z
Oak Haven was dark when Tessa arrived.
Technically, she had been ordered to remain in the command vehicle.
Technically, Damian had discovered by then that ordering Tessa Monroe to do anything usually produced negotiations he did not have time for.
So they compromised.
She entered with Carlo.
Damian and Adrian followed minutes later after securing Lucia.
Twenty-one minutes remained.
The hardware signal came from the dining room.
Tessa pushed open the doors.
One table had been set.
Table Twelve.
A woman sat alone.
Mid-forties.
Black dress.
Dark blond hair.
A glass of wine in front of her.
No visible weapon.
A silver device rested beside the plate.
Bellhaven key.
She smiled.
“Tessa Monroe.”
Tessa stopped.
“Apparently everyone knows me.”
“You’ve become important.”
“I preferred payroll.”
The woman laughed softly.
Damian entered.
Her smile changed.
“Damian Rossy.”
“Who are you?”
“Elise Vale.”
Adrian moved beside him.
“Thomas’s daughter.”
“Yes.”
“I met Thomas a hundred times.”
“He was good at secrets.”
Damian’s gaze dropped toward the hardware key.
“Disconnect it.”
“No.”
Carlo moved.
Elise lifted one finger.
“If anyone crosses the dining room, six hundred fourteen million dollars disappears into accounts none of you can recover.”
Tessa looked at the device.
“Bluff.”
Elise’s eyes shifted.
“Excuse me?”
“You need the transfer too.”
“Why?”
“If destroying Bellhaven were enough, you could wipe the records. You’re transferring assets because you need ownership.”
Elise smiled.
“You’re good.”
“I know.”
Damian’s mouth almost moved.
Tessa continued.
“And I don’t think the transfer is irreversible.”
Elise’s smile faded slightly.
“Careful.”
“You built redundancy.”
“Tessa.”
Damian’s warning was quiet.
She ignored him.
“Bellhaven survived forty years because it never trusted one person.”
Elise leaned back.
“Go on.”
“The founding families didn’t trust each other.”
Tessa walked slowly toward the nearest table.
Not closer to Elise.
Sideways.
“So the system would require counter-authorization.”
Adrian understood.
“From both active heirs.”
Tessa nodded.
“You forged the digital approval, but you can’t forge whatever legacy verification happens at completion.”
Elise lifted her glass.
“Unless I have that too.”
Damian’s face hardened.
“Luca.”
She smiled.
“Luca has been helpful.”
Carlo swore.
Tessa looked at the timer on her phone.
Seventeen minutes.
“What do you want?”
Elise’s expression became serious.
“Freedom.”
Damian laughed coldly.
“You kidnapped my mother for freedom?”
“I didn’t kidnap Lucia.”
“Luca did.”
“Without authorization.”
“Convenient.”
Elise placed the wineglass down.
“Our fathers built Bellhaven before I was born.”
“Join the club,” Adrian said.
“They tied every generation to it. Every marriage. Every business.”
Her eyes moved between the two men.
“You think you inherited money? You inherited obligations.”
Tessa understood.
“You’re not stealing Bellhaven.”
Elise looked at her.
“You’re liquidating it.”
“Yes.”
Damian lowered his weapon slightly.
“Then why frame me?”
Elise’s face hardened.
“Because Rossy names survive everything.”
“That is not an answer.”
“My brother died for one of your father’s debts.”
Damian frowned.
“I didn’t know Thomas had a son either.”
“Exactly.”
Elise stood.
“People like Salvatore Rossy made decisions. Other families buried children.”
Adrian laughed bitterly.
“And your solution was to repeat him?”
Elise looked at him.
“You’re one to talk.”
Adrian absorbed it.
Tessa checked the timer.
Twelve minutes.
“We can still stop this.”
Elise shook her head.
“No.”
“What happens after the transfer?”
“Bellhaven accounts empty. Blackmail network collapses. Assets scatter.”
“Into your control.”
“Temporarily.”
Damian laughed.
“No one steals six hundred million temporarily.”
“You would know.”
His eyes narrowed.
Tessa stepped closer.
“Who gets hurt?”
Elise looked at her.
“What?”
“If Bellhaven collapses tonight, who gets hurt besides rich criminals?”
Silence.
“Employees?”
Elise did not answer.
“Pensions? Mortgages? Vendors? Families?”
“You sound sentimental.”
“No.”
Tessa’s voice sharpened.
“I sound like an accountant.”
She pointed toward the device.
“You’re transferring corporate liquidity, not stacks of criminal cash.”
Elise’s face changed.
Tessa knew she was right.
“You pull everything at once, legitimate companies fail Monday morning.”
“That can be repaired.”
“By who?”
No answer.
“People miss payroll. Insurance lapses. Construction loans default. Retirement accounts freeze.”
Damian looked at Tessa.
She continued.
“You want to punish dead men by destroying people who never knew Bellhaven existed.”
Elise’s jaw tightened.
“Don’t moralize.”
“I’m not.”
Tessa stepped closer.
“I’m showing you your math is bad.”
That landed.
Seven minutes.
Elise looked at the key.
Then Damian.
“Even if I stop it, Bellhaven remains.”
“No,” Damian said.
Everyone looked at him.
He lowered his gun.
“We dissolve it legally.”
Adrian stared.
Damian continued.
“Open the corrupt records to counsel and authorities. Protect uninvolved people. Sell disputed holdings.”
He looked at Adrian.
“Split legitimate inheritance by agreement.”
Adrian’s eyebrows rose.
“You’re offering me half?”
“I’m offering you what should have been decided before our fathers turned us into weapons.”
Elise stared at them.
Five minutes.
“You think courts can untangle this?”
Evelyn’s voice suddenly came through Tessa’s phone.
“I can.”
Everyone looked down.
Tessa had called her thirty seconds earlier.
Evelyn continued.
“And before anyone insults me, yes, I heard enough to bill all of you.”
Even Elise almost smiled.
Four minutes.
Tessa held out her hand.
“The key.”
Elise looked at it.
“No guns.”
Damian immediately placed his weapon on the floor.
Carlo looked horrified.
Adrian did the same.
Three minutes.
Elise removed the hardware key.
Then stopped.
“If I hand this over, you promise Bellhaven ends.”
Damian looked at Adrian.
Adrian nodded.
“Yes.”
Damian repeated it.
“Yes.”
Elise disconnected the device.
The transfer timer froze.
00:02:11.
Everyone exhaled.
Then the restaurant lights went out.
A gunshot shattered the front window.
Carlo pulled Tessa down.
Damian lunged toward Elise.
Another shot.
Elise fell.
Blood spread across her shoulder.
A figure moved outside.
Adrian ran toward the service entrance.
Damian shouted, “No!”
Too late.
Tessa crawled toward Elise.
“Stay with me.”
Elise stared at the ceiling.
“That wasn’t… mine.”
“I know.”
Carlo radioed security.
Damian crouched beside them.
“Who else knew you were here?”
Elise’s face went pale.
“One person.”
“Who?”
Her lips moved.
Tessa leaned closer.
“Luca.”
Damian went still.
Outside, tires screamed.
Adrian returned.
“Shooter’s gone.”
Elise grabbed Tessa’s wrist.
Weakly.
“Key.”
“What?”
“The key.”
Tessa looked.
The hardware device was gone.
Someone had taken it during the darkness.
Damian turned toward the entrance.
Luca Rossy had not been trying to help Bellhaven survive.
May you like
He had been waiting for every other player to weaken one another.
And now he possessed the one device capable of taking everything.
