Chapter 14 - THE WAREHOUSE WHERE TWO SONS MET

Z

Damian went to the warehouse.

He did not go alone.

That was the compromise.

Carlo’s team surrounded the block.

Police were not involved.

Evelyn hated everything.

Tessa hated more.

“I’m coming inside.”

“No.”

“Damian.”

“No.”

They stood beside the SUV two streets away.

Tessa stared.

“You’re doing it again.”

“This is different.”

“You always say that.”

“This time there may genuinely be gunfire.”

“That is not persuasive.”

Damian’s mouth tightened.

“I need you alive.”

“And I need you not making reckless decisions because guilt has hijacked your personality.”

Carlo looked away.

Damian frowned.

“That was unnecessarily specific.”

“It was exactly specific enough.”

In the end, Tessa entered through a secondary office with Carlo while Damian walked onto the warehouse floor.

The building had once stored imported marble.

Now it was empty.

Adrian waited beneath a row of broken skylights.

No visible guards.

Damian stopped thirty feet away.

Tessa watched through a cracked interior window.

Adrian looked older than Damian.

Not by much.

But grief had aged him differently.

“You brought people,” Adrian said.

“Yes.”

“I said alone.”

“You also forged my signature and hired mercenaries.”

“Fair.”

Damian’s eyes narrowed.

“Why Meridian?”

Adrian reached into his coat.

Carlo’s hand moved toward his weapon.

Tessa grabbed his sleeve.

“Wait.”

Adrian removed a flash drive.

“The transfer wasn’t mine.”

Damian stared.

“You expect me to believe that?”

“No.”

Adrian placed the drive on a crate.

“I expected Bellhaven to use your name eventually.”

“Bellhaven isn’t a person.”

Adrian smiled without humor.

“That’s what Luca told you?”

Damian became still.

Tessa looked at Carlo.

He frowned.

Adrian continued.

“Our fathers weren’t the only partners.”

“What?”

“Bellhaven had five founding families.”

Damian’s face changed.

“No.”

“Rossy. Rinaldi. Moretti. Caruso. Vale.”

Tessa felt cold.

Five.

Luca had said two.

“He lied,” she whispered.

Carlo’s jaw tightened.

On the warehouse floor, Damian asked, “Why would Luca hide that?”

“Because he works for them.”

Tessa turned.

“No.”

Carlo already had his phone out.

Calling men at Lucia’s apartment.

No answer.

Again.

Nothing.

Adrian watched Damian understand.

“Call your mother.”

Damian did.

Straight to voicemail.

His face went white.

Tessa ran from the office.

“Tessa!”

Carlo followed.

Damian turned as she reached the floor.

“Lucia isn’t answering.”

Adrian’s expression changed.

“What?”

“You didn’t do it?” Tessa asked.

“No.”

For the first time, he looked genuinely alarmed.

Damian grabbed him by the coat.

“If this is a game—”

“It isn’t.”

Adrian did not fight back.

“Luca brought you to the house?”

“Yes.”

“He gave you access?”

“Yes.”

“He showed up again at Lucia’s?”

Damian released him.

Adrian swore.

“He needed you to find the ledgers.”

“Why?”

“Because Bellhaven’s old system only activates full transfer authority when a Rossy and Rinaldi heir access the archive.”

Tessa understood.

Adrian had known.

Damian had entered.

Both family lines were active again.

“What transfer?”

Adrian pointed at the flash drive.

“Everything.”

Tessa took it.

“We need a computer.”

The office had one old terminal.

She plugged in the drive.

Encrypted documents opened automatically.

Contracts.

Account pathways.

A scheduled transfer.

Time remaining:

01:42:18.

Amount:

$614,000,000.

Destination:

Multiple offshore trusts.

Authorization:

D. Rossy.

A. Rinaldi.

Neither man had signed it.

Tessa whispered, “They’re stealing the entire network.”

Adrian looked at Damian.

“Now you understand.”

“Who?”

Adrian’s face hardened.

“The surviving founding partners.”

“Names.”

“Vincent Moretti. Elena Caruso. Thomas Vale.”

Damian stared.

“All dead.”

“Publicly.”

Carlo’s phone rang.

He answered.

His face changed.

“Mrs. Rossy is gone.”

Damian stopped breathing.

“What do you mean gone?”

“Apartment was empty. Two guards unconscious. Luca missing.”

Damian looked at Adrian.

“Where would they take her?”

“I don’t know.”

Tessa examined the transfer protocol.

There was a physical authorization requirement.

A legacy fail-safe.

“Wait.”

Everyone looked at her.

“The transfer can’t finalize remotely.”

“What?” Damian asked.

“Final approval requires a hardware key.”

Adrian went pale.

“Lucia.”

Damian turned.

“What about her?”

Adrian looked sick.

“Your father gave her his Bellhaven key.”

Damian stared.

“She never knew.”

“Exactly.”

Tessa closed her eyes.

The package.

The VHS tape.

Luca had been inside Lucia’s apartment.

He could have located the key then.

Unless it was something Lucia wore.

Tessa remembered.

The silver medallion Lucia never removed.

Oval.

Heavy.

Old.

“Her necklace.”

Damian’s face changed.

He pulled out his phone.

Tracked Lucia’s device.

Offline.

Adrian took out his own.

“I can find Luca.”

“How?”

“He still uses an old Bellhaven emergency network.”

“Track it.”

Adrian hesitated.

Damian’s eyes hardened.

“Now.”

Adrian typed.

A location appeared.

Red Hook.

A private pier.

Carlo was already moving.

Twenty minutes later, vehicles surrounded an abandoned ferry terminal.

Tessa remained in the command car.

This time she did not argue.

Not because Damian ordered her.

Because she chose the role where she was most useful.

She monitored the transfer clock.

Forty-eight minutes.

Forty-seven.

Adrian and Damian entered together.

Inside, they found Luca.

And Lucia.

She sat in a chair.

Unhurt.

Furious.

The necklace was gone.

Luca stood across from them.

“You should have stayed out of Bellhaven.”

Damian raised his gun.

“Where is the key?”

Luca smiled sadly.

“Already delivered.”

“To who?”

“You still think this is about money.”

Adrian stepped forward.

“It is always about money with Bellhaven.”

“No.”

Luca looked at both men.

“It’s about survival.”

Tessa listened through Damian’s microphone.

Luca continued.

“Your fathers understood the world was changing. They built something designed to outlive arrests, deaths, betrayal.”

“You kidnapped my mother.”

“I protected her.”

Lucia shouted, “You put a bag over my head!”

Luca winced.

“Temporarily.”

Damian’s gun remained steady.

“Where is the key?”

Luca looked at him.

“Thomas Vale’s daughter has it.”

Damian frowned.

“Thomas Vale had no daughter.”

Luca smiled.

“That’s what you were supposed to believe.”

Tessa’s screen flashed.

Thirty minutes.

Then another alert appeared.

Authorization key connected.

Transfer sequence resumed.

She grabbed the radio.

“Damian.”

He answered instantly.

“What?”

“The key just went live.”

“Where?”

Tessa traced the network.

Coordinates loaded.

Manhattan.

Then a building.

Her stomach dropped.

“Damian…”

“Tell me.”

She stared at the address.

“Oak Haven.”

Silence.

May you like

Someone had brought the final Bellhaven key into Damian’s own restaurant.

And the transfer would complete in twenty-nine minutes.
