Chapter 7 - The Abandoned Warehouse

The East River textile warehouse was a rotting hulk of rusted corrugated iron and broken windows.
Adrien killed his headlights fifty yards away, cutting the engine and rolling to a silent stop behind a stack of shipping crates. He stepped out into the damp, freezing night air, drawing his weapon.
Three armed guards stood outside the loading bay doors, smoking cigarettes and laughing quietly. They didn't hear him coming.
Adrien moved with the cold, calculated efficiency of a predator who had spent a lifetime surviving the underworld. In less than thirty seconds, all three guards were unconscious on the asphalt, neatly lowered to the ground without a single shot fired.
He kicked open the side metal door and stepped into the cavernous, dark interior of the warehouse.
“Adrien Moretti! I knew you’d come!”
The voice echoed from the upper catwalks. Adrien looked up to see Vincenzo standing near the metal railing, holding a small, terrified Mia in his arms, a silver revolver pressed carelessly against her temple.
A few feet away stood Isabella Romano, wrapped in her designer coat, watching the scene with a cold, triumphant smirk.
“Drop the gun, Adrien!” Vincenzo shouted, his voice echoing off the concrete walls. “Drop the gun, or the girl takes the first flight out of this world!”
Adrien froze. His eyes locked onto Mia.
The little girl’s eyes were wide with unshed tears, her lower lip trembling. When she saw him standing below, a tiny gasp escaped her lips.
“Adrien…” she whimpered, using the name she had learned to say by watching him. “Open your mouth…”
The innocent, heartbreaking request sliced through the tension in the warehouse like a razor.
Adrien slowly lowered his gun, letting it clatter against the concrete floor.
“Let her go, Vincenzo,” Adrien said, his voice terrifyingly calm. “This is between you and me. The child has nothing to do with this.”
“She has everything to do with this!” Vincenzo roared, stepping closer to the edge of the catwalk. “She is the symbol of your weakness! She is why the Moretti name is being dragged through the mud! Isabella was right—you needed to be cured of this disease!”
Isabella stepped forward, her smile widening. “Just sign the papers, Adrien. Hand over the syndicate control to the council, marry me on Sunday, and the brat goes back to her mother in one piece. Refuse, and watch what happens when an old man loses his grip.”

Adrien took a slow step forward, raising his hands palms up.
“All right,” he said softly. “You win.”
