Chapter 3 - The Arrival of the Past

The warning came not with a phone call, but with the heavy crunch of tires on the estate’s gravel driveway.

It was 9:00 AM on a crisp Thursday. Elena was polishing the brass fixtures in the grand foyer when a sleek black sedan pulled up beneath the portico.

The door opened, and an older woman stepped out. Margaret Moretti’s sister, Aunt Beatrice—a woman whose face had been carved by decades of inherited wealth, bitter judgments, and unwavering loyalty to the syndicate.

Behind her stepped Isabella Romano.

Isabella was wearing a tailored designer coat, her dark hair pinned into an immaculate chignon, her expression a masterclass in haughty elegance. For ten years, the Red Hook underworld had assumed Isabella would marry Adrien Moretti, merging two of the most powerful Italian-American families on the East Coast. Though the wedding had been delayed by gang wars and corporate maneuvers, Isabella had always carried herself as the uncrowned queen of the estate.

Elena immediately lowered her head, stepping back toward the shadows of the staircase to make herself invisible.

“Beatrice, welcome,” the head housekeeper greeted them at the double doors.

“Save the pleasantries,” Beatrice snapped, walking into the foyer like she owned the stones beneath her feet. “Where is my nephew? We received disturbing reports about this estate, and it’s time someone restored order.”

Adrien appeared at the top of the grand staircase a moment later, his expression colder than winter ice.

“Aunt Beatrice. Isabella. To what do I owe the ambush?”

Isabella glided toward the stairs, looking up at him with a practiced, seductive smile that didn't quite reach her eyes. “We didn't mean to ambush you, Adrien. But rumors travel fast in Brooklyn. People are saying the great Adrien Moretti has turned his fortress into a daycare center.”

Adrien’s jaw tightened. He descended the stairs slowly, his boots clicking rhythmically against the marble. “My private affairs are none of your concern.”

“When your private affairs involve a common maid’s bastard child sitting at your desk, it becomes family business,” Beatrice declared, her voice echoing through the high-ceilinged foyer.

Elena stood frozen by the staircase, her heart slamming against her ribs.

Isabella turned her head, her sharp eyes scanning the room until they locked onto Elena standing in the shadows. Isabella’s gaze traveled slowly over Elena’s simple black maid’s uniform, taking in every detail with undisguised contempt.

Then, a cold, knowing smile spread across Isabella’s lips.

It was the look of a woman who had just discovered that the alliance threatening to slip from her hands wore a housekeeper’s apron—and who realized she finally had a weapon sharp enough to destroy them both.
