Chapter 8 - The Maya Graves Foundation

Six months later, the city of New York was blanketed in a soft, pristine layer of early winter snow.
The grand auditorium at the Metropolitan Civic Center was packed with over a thousand attendees—journalists, civil rights attorneys, pediatric healthcare advocates, and city officials. Banners hanging from the high ceilings bore the elegant gold logo of The Maya Graves Children's Protection Trust.
Standing behind the podium on the main stage was Liana Graves.
She wore a tailored navy-blue suit, her dark hair styled in an elegant, professional knot. Gone was the pale, hollowed-out grieving woman in a coarse red maid’s uniform. In her place stood a formidable, commanding leader whose name had become synonymous with unyielding justice and child advocacy across the nation.
In the front row of the auditorium sat Matteo Varric, dressed in an immaculate black tuxedo. On his lap sat fifteen-month-old Nico, who was happily clapping his small hands together as he watched Liana on stage.
"Six months ago," Liana’s voice echoed clearly through the auditorium’s state-of-the-art sound system, "I believed my life was over. I believed that when a system fails you, when power and money cover up terrible truths, the small and vulnerable are left with no voice."
She paused, looking directly down at Matteo and Nico in the front row.
"But I learned that truth is an unstoppable force when driven by love," Liana continued, her tone steady and inspiring. "Over the past half-year, our foundation has successfully audited over forty pediatric research facilities, exposed three illegal pharmaceutical syndicates, and provided full medical sanctuary for over two hundred compromised children."
The crowd erupted into thunderous applause.
Liana smiled gracefully, waiting for the room to settle before concluding her speech. "We cannot bring back the precious angels we have lost... but we can ensure that no child ever suffers in silence again. Thank you."
As she stepped away from the podium, the standing ovation lasted for nearly three minutes.
Liana descended the stage stairs, where Matteo stood waiting for her, holding Nico in his left arm.
"That was an extraordinary speech, Director Graves," Matteo murmured, his eyes glowing with fierce pride as he reached out his right arm to pull her close.
"Thank you, Mr. Varric," Liana smiled, leaning in to kiss little Nico on his soft cheek. The boy giggled, reaching out to grab a lock of Liana’s hair with his little fingers. "Mama!" Nico babble-chattered happily.
Liana’s heart leaped. Over the past three months, Nico had begun calling her 'Mama'—a title she accepted with profound reverence, holding it alongside the eternal memory of her sweet Maya.
"He called you Mama again," Matteo noted softly, a warm smile touching his lips.
"He does that when he wants a pretzel," Liana joked, lightly tapping Nico’s small nose.
"He does that because he knows who loves him," Matteo corrected gently.
They walked together through the private exit corridor of the civic center toward their waiting motorcade. Frank opened the door to the heavy armored sedan, bowing his head respectfully as Liana and Nico stepped inside.
As Matteo climbed in beside them, his encrypted phone vibrated in his jacket pocket. He pulled it out and glanced at the screen.
It was a secure message from his intelligence team in Europe:
RE: MORETTI ASSETS. ALL SURVIVING FAMILY MEMBERS HAVE OFFICIALLY FORFEITED REAL ESTATE HOLDINGS IN SICILY AND ZURICH. TRUST FUNDS LIQUIDATED AND TRANSFERRED TO THE MAYA GRAVES FOUNDATION.
Matteo closed the phone and slipped it back into his coat. The war was officially over. The shadows that had plagued his family for generations were completely eradicated, replaced by the light Liana had brought into his world.
He looked across the leather seat at Liana, who was singing a quiet lullaby to Nico as the snow fell gently against the tinted windows outside.
"What are you thinking about?" Liana asked softly, catching his gaze.
"I was thinking about the day you dropped those linens in the foyer," Matteo said, taking her hand and resting it on his knee. "I was a desperate man trapped in a nightmare I couldn't understand. And you walked right through my guards without an ounce of fear."
"I was terrified," Liana admitted, smiling gently. "You looked like a demon."
"And now?" Matteo asked, raising an eyebrow.
May you like
Liana looked into his warm gray eyes, feeling the absolute safety, love, and strength that surrounded her and Nico every single day.
"And now," Liana whispered, leaning her head against his shoulder, "I know you're my family."
