Chapter 7 - The Downfall of Moretti

By seven o'clock that morning, as the sun finally broke through the storm clouds over Manhattan, the city’s underground empire was shattered by a series of precise, devastating strikes.

Using the financial records and encrypted communications recovered from the Aegis Biopharma lab, Matteo Varric launched an all-out economic and legal war against the Moretti family.

Federal agents from the FBI and the Department of Justice, tipped off by an anonymous release of the Project Nightshade files, raided the headquarters of Aegis Biopharma and thirty-two subsidiaries connected to Don Moretti. Arrest warrants were issued for forty-eight senior executives, high-ranking doctors, and syndicate members.

Simultaneously, Matteo’s private tactical forces executed targeted seizures of Moretti shipping terminals along the Hudson River, effectively cutting off their revenue streams in a single morning.

By noon, the Varric estate was quiet once again.

In the sunlit glass conservatory on the ground floor, Liana sat in a plush armchair, holding Nico in her lap. The baby was dressed in a simple, soft white romper that Liana had personally bought from a local department store an hour ago. He was laughing happily, reaching his chubby little hands up to play with a silver rattle.

The doors to the conservatory opened, and Matteo walked in.

He had changed out of his wet, battle-worn clothes into a sharp, charcoal-gray suit. He looked well-rested, though a permanent edge of quiet authority remained etched into his features.

He walked over and sat down in the chair opposite Liana, watching his son play.

"Don Moretti was arrested an hour ago at his estate in Long Island," Matteo said softly. "The federal prosecutors have charged him under the RICO act, along with forty counts of corporate murder and illegal chemical weapons development. He will never see the light of day again."

Liana took a deep breath, feeling a massive, invisible weight lifted from her chest. "And Saint Jude's?"

"The board of directors has been dismantled," Matteo replied. "The hospital is under federal receivership. A public memorial is being constructed on the grounds to honor the infants who were lost... including Maya."

Liana looked down at Nico, tears silently filling her eyes once again. But this time, they were not tears of pure grief—they were tears of peace. Justice had been delivered. Her baby girl’s short life had not been forgotten; it had saved the life of another child and brought down a network of monsters.

"Thank you, Matteo," Liana whispered.

Matteo reached across the small table and took her hand in his. His grip was warm, strong, and reassuring.

"No, Liana," Matteo said firmly. "Thank you. You walked into this house as a grieving mother who thought she had nothing left to give. You saved my son when nobody else could. You gave me back my life."

Nico babbled happily, leaning over Liana’s knee and reaching out his little hands toward his father.

Matteo smiled—a rare, genuine expression that transformed his rugged face—and reached down to lift his son into his arms. Nico didn't cry. He nestled comfortably against his father's chest, grabbing Matteo’s silk tie with his little fingers.

Matteo looked up at Liana. "I have a proposal for you, Liana Graves."

Liana raised an eyebrow. "A proposal?"

"This estate is too large, too cold, and too full of dark history," Matteo said, looking around the bright conservatory. "I am establishing a foundation in Maya’s name—The Maya Graves Children’s Protection Trust. It will fund independent pediatric safety audits across the country and provide legal defense for families who have been wronged by medical institutions."

Liana’s breath hitched. "Matteo... that's..."

"I want you to run it," Matteo continued, his dark eyes locking onto hers with deep sincerity. "I want you to be the President of the foundation. You will have unlimited resources, full legal authority, and my personal security detail at your disposal."

Liana stared at him, overwhelmed by the magnitude of his offer. "I... I don't know anything about running a foundation, Matteo."

"You have something far more valuable than a business degree, Liana," Matteo said softly. "You have a mother's heart, unbreakable courage, and a complete intolerance for injustice. You are the only person I trust to lead it."

He paused, glancing down at Nico, who was happily playing with his watch band, then back at Liana.

"And," Matteo added, his voice lowering into a gentle, meaningful tone, "Nico needs you. I need you. Stay here, Liana. Not as a maid... but as a part of this family."

Liana looked at Matteo, then at little Nico, who turned his dark, joyful eyes toward her and let out a soft, delighted giggle.

The painful, empty void that had consumed her soul for twenty-two days didn't disappear completely—the memory of Maya would always remain sacred within her heart—but for the first time since that rainy morning at the cemetery, Liana felt a spark of hope warmth returning to her life.

She smiled, a radiant, beautiful expression that lit up her entire face.

"I'll stay," Liana whispered.
