Chapter 21 - THE HOUSE WITH NO GUNSTommy saw Harrington first.

An elderly man walking up the driveway carrying nothing.

No weapon.

No bag.

Just a cane.

Grace was in the kitchen making cookies with Marisol.

Tommy locked the door.

Harrington stopped outside.

Then raised both hands.

“I need to speak with Liam.”

Tommy called Clara.

By the time Liam reached the farmhouse, federal agents surrounded the property.

Harrington had made no attempt to run.

Liam stepped from the car.

Clara grabbed his arm.

“Remember.”

“I remember.”

Grace saw him through the window.

“Daddy!”

Liam smiled at her.

Then approached Harrington.

“You came to my home.”

“I knew it was the only place you’d meet me quickly.”

“You studied my daughter.”

“I never harmed Grace.”

“You violated her.”

Harrington’s expression tightened.

Liam continued.

“You took her blood. Her records. Her genetics.”

“I was trying to finish something that could save millions.”

“There it is.”

“What?”

“The sentence men like my father always use.”

Liam stepped closer.

“The number is big enough, so the person in front of you stops mattering.”

Harrington’s face changed.

For the first time, Liam saw shame.

“Where is Katherine?”

Harrington looked at him.

“Alive.”

Liam’s knees almost weakened.

“Where?”

“Canada.”

“And you know?”

“I’ve known for years.”

Liam wanted to hit him.

Instead he asked:

“Why come here?”

Harrington looked toward the house.

At Grace.

Then whispered:

“Because Katherine Mercer is Doctor K.”

Silence.

Clara stared.

“No.”

Harrington nodded.

“She never left the work.”

Liam felt something inside him collapse.

The video.

The apology.

The warning.

All of it could still be true.

And yet Katherine had continued.

Harrington handed Liam a key.

“Montreal storage facility.”

“What’s there?”

“Everything.”

“Why give it to us?”

Harrington smiled sadly.

“Because Katherine decided Grace is next.”

Liam moved so fast that agents reached for their weapons.

He stopped inches from Harrington.

“You said you never harmed her.”

“I didn’t.”

“You helped Katherine.”

“I tried to stop her.”

Liam laughed.

“Now you want redemption?”

“No.”

Harrington looked exhausted.

“I want the work destroyed.”

Liam understood something then.

Harrington had not come to surrender because he had become good.

He had come because the monster he helped create had grown beyond his control.

Clara stepped beside Liam.

“Agents take him.”

Harrington looked at her.

“You think law will move fast enough?”

Clara answered:

“It has to.”

Harrington smiled.

“Victor Mercer used to say the same thing before he stopped pretending.”

Liam stared at him.

Then turned away.

That was the victory Harrington did not expect.

Liam Mercer walked back toward his family.

He did not hit him.

Did not threaten him.

Did not become Victor.

Grace opened the front door.

“Daddy!”

Liam picked her up.

She put flour on his coat.

“Cookie?”

He closed his eyes.

Held his daughter.

And whispered:

“Yes.”

Behind him, federal agents handcuffed Samuel Harrington.

For the first time, Liam understood that sometimes the strongest thing he could do to protect his family was leave an enemy alive long enough to answer for what he had done.
