Chapter 15 - THE FOUNDATION ON TRIALBy morning, every television network carried Liam Mercer’s face.

FORMER CRIME BOSS’S CHARITY LINKED TO SECRET MERCER FUNDS.

The accusations were devastating.

Millions donated anonymously to the Thomas Bennett Foundation had originated from an offshore trust established by Victor Mercer.

Liam knew nothing about it.

Neither did Clara.

That didn’t matter online.

Patients panicked.

Hospitals suspended partnerships.

Donors demanded audits.

The foundation’s emergency assistance accounts were frozen.

At nine that morning, Clara received a call from a mother in Ohio.

“My son’s surgery is Thursday.”

Clara closed her eyes.

“We’re working on it.”

“You promised us.”

“I know.”

“He needs this surgery.”

“I know.”

After the call ended, Clara locked herself inside her office.

Liam found her there.

She was staring at a wall covered with photographs of families the foundation had helped.

“What do we do?”

He had never heard her sound so defeated.

Liam sat beside her.

“We separate the foundation from me.”

She looked at him.

“What?”

“I resign from the board.”

“No.”

“If my name is the problem—”

“You already removed your name years ago.”

“My money is still everywhere.”

“So is mine.”

“Clara.”

“No.”

She faced him.

“We are not teaching Grace that the answer to shame is disappearing.”

That stopped him.

Clara continued.

“We open everything.”

“Everything?”

“Every account. Every donor. Every expense.”

“That will expose private—”

“Then protect patient information and expose the rest.”

She took his hand.

“You spent your childhood watching your father survive by hiding things.”

Her voice softened.

“We survive this differently.”

Liam nodded.

An hour later, they announced a fully independent forensic audit.

Every transaction.

Every Mercer-related contribution.

Every executive salary.

Everything.

The public reaction shifted slightly.

Then someone released another file.

A payment.

Five hundred thousand dollars.

Sent from a Victor Mercer trust six years earlier.

Recipient:

Daniel Bennett.

Clara’s father.

The same week Tommy received his transplant.

Clara stared at the document.

“No.”

Liam looked at her.

Daniel had insisted he had been isolated, broke, terrified.

Yet half a million dollars had moved into an account under his legal name.

Clara drove to Vermont.

Liam went with her.

Daniel saw the statement.

And immediately stopped pretending.

“I can explain.”

Clara laughed.

“That sentence should be engraved on your tombstone.”

Daniel rubbed both hands over his face.

“The money wasn’t for me.”

“Then who?”

He hesitated.

Clara stood.

“Tell me.”

Daniel whispered a name.

“Miriam Vale.”

Liam froze.

Vale.

Elizabeth Vale.

Adrian’s mother.

“Who is Miriam?”

Daniel answered:

“Elizabeth’s younger sister.”

“And why did you pay her?”

“Because she had the missing pages.”

Clara stared.

Daniel looked at Liam.

“Miriam Vale has spent thirty years building a case against the Mercers.”

“Then why attack our foundation?”

Daniel’s face darkened.

“Because she doesn’t believe you changed.”

Liam said nothing.

Daniel continued.

“She believes everything good you built is just another Mercer disguise.”

Clara shook her head.

“She used sick children to prove that?”

“No.”

Daniel looked frightened.

“That’s the problem.”

“What?”

“The Miriam Vale I knew would never hurt patients.”

He looked at the frozen foundation accounts.

“If she’s doing this now…”

Daniel swallowed.

“Something happened to her.”

Liam’s phone rang.

Unknown number.

He answered.

A woman spoke.

“Liam Mercer?”

“Yes.”

“My name is Miriam Vale.”

Everyone went still.

“You’ve spent years pretending your family story ended happily.”

Her voice was calm.

“It didn’t.”

Liam’s eyes hardened.

“What do you want?”

“The truth.”

“Then come say it in person.”

She laughed softly.

“I already did.”

The line disconnected.

Clara frowned.

“What does that mean?”

Then Daniel looked toward the hallway.

His face changed.

A nurse stood there.

Forties.

Dark hair.

Hospital badge.

She smiled.

May you like

Daniel whispered:

“Miriam.”
