Chapter 4 - THE SHATTERED GLASS

That night, the mansion felt darker than it ever had before.

After putting the children to bed—Leo and Lily fast asleep in the nursery after an exhausting day—I walked down the dark corridor toward the study.

The door was unlocked, resting slightly ajar.

A single desk lamp cast long, eerie shadows across the leather-bound books and oil paintings. The air inside the room was thick with the bitter smell of cheap tobacco and heavy scotch.

Dominic sat behind his massive mahogany desk.

The contents of the yellow envelope were spread out across the blotter—wire transfer receipts, forged passport copies, forensic dental records from two years ago, and high-resolution surveillance photos taken in Argentina just three months ago.

In the photos, a beautiful blonde woman with striking blue eyes was sitting on the balcony of a luxury villa, sipping champagne. Elena Moretti.

Dominic didn't look up when I stepped into the room. He was holding a crystal tumbler of whiskey in his hand, his knuckles white, staring at a framed photograph of his wife that had sat on his desk for years.

"It was all a lie," he whispered. His voice sounded broken, hollowed out from the inside. "Two years... I killed thirty men. I burned down half the city. I locked myself in this dark house, letting my son wither away in silence... all for a woman who sold us out for money."

My heart ached for him so intensely it felt like my own chest was breaking.

I walked over slowly, standing right beside his chair. I didn't say a word. I simply reached out and placed my hand over his trembling fist resting on the desk.

Dominic stilled at my touch.

He slowly turned his head, looking up at me through the dark shadows of the room. The agony in his eyes was unbearable—a man who had built an empire on loyalty, only to realize his entire foundation was built on betrayal.

"She didn't just abandon me, Isabella," Dominic choked out, a single, heavy tear finally slipping down his cheek. "She left Leo in that car. She knew the bomb was set to detonate. She didn't care if our six-year-old son lived or died."

"Dominic..." I breathed, tears streaming down my own face.

I couldn't help myself. I leaned down and wrapped my arms around his broad shoulders, pulling his head against my chest.

Dominic let out a ragged, shuddering breath, his hands coming up to wrap tightly around my waist, clinging to me as if I were the only solid thing left in a world that had completely collapsed beneath his feet.

For a long time, we stayed like that in the dark room, listening to the rain beat against the windowpanes. The boss of Boston wept silently against my shoulder, pouring out two years of buried pain, anger, and betrayal.

When he finally pulled back slightly, his face was inches from mine.

His dark eyes were searching my face, reading every line of worry, care, and devotion written across my features.

"You brought light back into this house, Isabella," Dominic whispered, his hand rising to cup my cheek gently, his thumb brushing away a stray tear. "When I look at you... I see everything she was supposed to be."

My breath hitched. "Dominic, I'm just your housekeeper..."

"You are the woman holding my family together," he corrected fiercely, his fingers sliding into my hair, pulling me down toward him.

When his lips met mine, it wasn't harsh or violent. It was a slow, desperate, incredibly tender kiss—a surrender of two broken souls finding solace in the middle of a war.

The kiss filled me with a hot, electrifying warmth that swept away every doubt in my mind. I kissed him back, my hands sliding into his dark hair, offering him everything I had.

When we finally broke apart, both of us panting softly, Dominic rested his forehead against mine.

"I will fix this," Dominic swore softly, his eyes burning with a new, dark resolve. "I will handle Elena. I will protect Leo. And I will never let anyone hurt you or Lily."
