Chapter 5 - Evidence and Execution

By 10:30 PM, the Finch party was gone.

Their departure had been humiliating and quiet. Gregory Finch had avoided looking at me as he loaded the last of their oversized duffel bags into the Lincoln Navigator. Brenda had wept quietly in the front passenger seat. As they pulled out of the driveway, Deputy Miller followed them to the highway to ensure they did not return.

Deputy Vance lingered by his cruiser, finishing the narrative section of his incident report under the glow of the cabin's porch light.

"I’ve logged the forged document, the Zelle transaction receipts provided by Mr. Finch, and your statement, Ms. Kellan," Vance said, handing me a slip of yellow carbon paper containing the incident number. "A detective from the financial crimes division will follow up with you on Monday. Given the cross-state wire transfer and the amount, the state's attorney may look at this very seriously."

"Thank you, Deputy," I said, shaking his calloused hand. "I appreciate your professionalism."

"Lock your doors tonight, counselor," he said kindly before stepping into his vehicle and driving off down the dark gravel lane.

I went back inside the house.

The silence that settled over the living room was thick, suffocating, and heavy with the scent of cheap cologne, unfamiliar shampoo, and stale beer.

I didn't go to sleep. Instead, I stripped every sheet from every bed, carrying the linens out to the garage in heavy contractor trash bags. I wiped down the kitchen counters with disinfectant. I threw out the half-empty bourbon bottles.

Then I sat down at the dining table with my laptop.

If Sabine had rented the house to Gregory Finch for five thousand dollars, this wasn't an impulsive, one-time indiscretion. Fraud of this nature required infrastructure: listings, communication channels, cleaning schedules, payment routing.

I logged into my home router's administrative dashboard.

The router tracked every connected device over the last ninety days. I exported the log into a spreadsheet. In addition to the six devices belonging to the Finch party, the network had registered twelve other unique MAC addresses over the preceding six weeks.

Two weekend bookings in May. One four-day booking over Memorial Day weekend.

My hands grew completely cold.

She hadn't just rented it once. She had been operating an unauthorized, clandestine boutique rental business out of my lake house since the spring thaw.

I opened an incognito browser window and searched the local vacation rental aggregators: VRBO, Airbnb, Furnished Finder, and private boutique vacation portals.

It took me twenty minutes to find it on a mid-tier regional luxury site: *The Cedar Sanctuary at Lake Geneva — Hosted by Sabine K.*

The listing photos were my rooms. My hand-picked mid-century modern furniture. My private art collection. My deck. The nightly rate was listed at $750, with a three-night minimum. The reviews—four of them—praised "Sabine" for her seamless check-in and complimentary bottle of local wine.

I took high-resolution screenshots of every single page, every review, and every booking window. I printed them directly to PDF, saving them in a secure cloud folder labeled *State v. Kellan*.

At 1:15 AM, while I was documenting the third transaction record, my laptop chimed.

An email had arrived in my primary firm inbox. It wasn't from my family; they didn't have that address.

The sender was Nolan Price, sent from his private consultancy domain: *[email protected]*.

The subject line was simple: *Notice of Immediate Liability & Proposed Resolution.*

I opened it.

*Meredith,* the email began, written with the pseudo-legal pomposity typical of corporate grifters.

*Your reckless actions today in Napa Valley have caused direct, quantifiable financial harm to my family and my business interests. My parents’ nonrefundable commercial airfare, our executive car rentals, and the emergency lodging we were forced to secure at a boutique hotel in St. Helena total $11,400. Furthermore, my father suffered an acute hypertensive episode at the estate gates requiring medical evaluation by local paramedics.*

*Sabine is currently under severe psychological distress due to your threats regarding the Wisconsin property. The funds collected for the seasonal licensing of the lakefront cottage were earmarked for Kellan-Price Media LLC, an entity in which Sabine holds fifty-percent equity. We hold text messages from your mother establishing that the family had full stewardship of the Wisconsin property.*

*If you move forward with filing criminal charges against Sabine with the Walworth County Sheriff’s Department, we will immediately initiate civil proceedings against you in Cook County Circuit Court for breach of oral contract, intentional infliction of emotional distress, and defamation. We will also submit a formal ethics complaint to the Illinois Attorney Registration and Disciplinary Commission regarding your retaliatory misconduct.*

*We are prepared to settle this matter privately. You will reimburse my parents the $11,400, release the Wisconsin property for the remaining three summer bookings currently on the calendar (totaling $16,800 in contracted revenue), and sign a mutual non-disparagement agreement.*

*You have until 5:00 PM on Sunday to respond before our counsel files.*

I stared at the screen in the quiet of my violated house.

They didn't just want an apology. They didn't just think they were entitled to my money, my home, and my professional reputation.

They truly believed that because I had spent a lifetime quietly cleaning up their messes, I would roll over when threatened with a paper tiger.

I looked down at the carbon copy of the criminal incident report resting beside my keyboard.

Then I looked at the three upcoming booking dates listed on Sabine’s fraudulent vacation profile: the first one scheduled to check in next Friday afternoon.

A slow, humorless smile touched the corners of my mouth.

I opened a blank document, inserted my firm's formal legal letterhead, and began to type.
