Chapter 17 - The Old Virginia Returns

Walter recovered.

But those first two days were frightening.

Virginia barely slept.

She questioned every doctor.

Corrected every nurse.

Ordered Justin around.

Finally, in the hospital cafeteria, she turned on me.

"You should have brought Emma. Walter needs to see his granddaughter."

I stared at her.

"Emma has a fever."

"It's probably nothing."

"No."

Virginia's expression hardened.

And suddenly we were back in my kitchen years earlier.

I saw it.

She saw it.

Neither of us spoke.

Then Virginia closed her eyes.

"I'm doing it again."

"Yes."

She sat down.

"I'm scared."

"I know."

"I'm sorry."

"I know."

That was growth.

Not never failing.

Recognizing the failure faster.

Virginia called the nurse she'd snapped at and apologized.

She apologized to Justin.

Then she slept for six hours.

Walter went home three days later.

At their house, I watched Virginia bring him soup.

He tasted it.

She raised an eyebrow.

"Well?"

Walter smiled.

"Needs more spice."

Virginia nearly threw the napkin at him.

Everyone laughed.

A week later, Walter called me privately.

"Thank you."

"For what?"

"For not giving up on her."

I shook my head.

"She did the work."

"Yes."

He paused.

"But somebody had to stop accepting the old version."

That stayed with me.

Years earlier, I'd worried that removing Virginia's plate had been childish.

Maybe part of it had been.

I was angry.

I was tired.

I wasn't executing some perfect communication strategy.

But it had interrupted a pattern.

Sometimes boundaries arrive gracefully.

Sometimes they arrive carrying a dinner plate.

Either way, the important part comes afterward.

What do people choose once the boundary is visible?

Virginia had chosen change.

Justin had chosen courage.

Walter had chosen honesty.

And I had chosen to leave room for people to become better without surrendering the right to protect myself.

May you like

One final dinner would show just how far all of us had come.
