Chapter 5 - The Legal Obliteration

That evening, the video from the plaza went globally viral.

With over 25 million views across TikTok, X, and YouTube within twelve hours, the story became a national sensation: "Billionaire Founder Exposes Abusive Husband and Mother-in-Law on Four-Story City Screens After Wedding Night Assault."

The public backlash was swift, relentless, and completely inescapable.

By Thursday morning, the District Attorney’s office, feeling immense pressure from public outrage, officially filed criminal charges against Derek Halston for Simple Assault, Domestic Battery, and Extortion.

Two police detectives arrived at Marjorie’s house at 8:00 AM, executing a formal arrest warrant. Derek was led out of his mother’s home in handcuffs, surrounded by local news cameras, his head hanging low in deep humiliation.

At the same time, my legal team filed an emergency forensic audit into Halston Logistics.

The results were catastrophic for Derek:

The court found him guilty of intentional financial fraud, revoking his corporate license permanently.

His business assets were liquidated to satisfy $1.8 million in outstanding creditor debts.

His personal sports car, custom watch collection, and luxury club memberships were seized by court marshals.

Because of his criminal conviction for domestic violence, his petition for spousal support or alimony from my estate was thrown out of court with prejudice.

Marjorie didn't escape the fallout either.

Her rowhouse, which had been put up as secondary collateral for Derek’s illegal business loans without her full understanding, was seized by the bank to cover outstanding bankruptcy liabilities.

On a cold Tuesday morning in November, I sat in the family court division room for the final annulment hearing.

Derek sat at the defense table in an orange prison jumpsuit, flanked by a court-appointed public defender. He had lost twenty pounds, his hair was shaved short, and his posture was completely broken.

Marjorie sat in the back row of the gallery, wearing an old coat, looking aged, exhausted, and completely defeated.

The judge looked over the legal filings, stamped the documents with a heavy wooden mallet, and looked up at the room.

"The marriage between Brynn Calloway and Derek Halston is hereby declared null and void on grounds of fraud, physical assault, and coercion," the judge announced sternly. "Mr. Halston, you are ordered to pay $50,000 in legal restitution to the petitioner, and a permanent five-hundred-yard restraining order is hereby issued against both you and your mother, Marjorie Halston."

Derek didn't even look up. He simply nodded weakly as the bailiffs cuffed his wrists behind his back to lead him back to the holding cell.

As I gathered my coat and walked down the courtroom aisle, Marjorie stepped into the pathway, tears streaming down her wrinkled face.

"Brynn..." Marjorie whimpered, her voice raspy and broken. "Please... he’s serving six months in county jail. I’m being evicted from my house next week. I have nowhere to go. Have you no mercy? We were family!"

I paused, looking at the woman who had dropped a filthy bucket of vomit water at my feet three months ago.

"Family doesn't abuse," I said, my voice completely devoid of hatred, anger, or pity. "Family protects. You taught your son that power comes from cruelty. I simply taught him that power comes from truth."

I walked past her without looking back once.
