Chapter 4 - The Public Ambush Goes Horribly Wrong

At 4:30 PM, during peak rush hour in Center City, Marjorie and Derek arrived at the glass plaza outside Northstar Ridge Headquarters.
Marjorie had brought two of her local neighborhood friends and had called a local tabloid news reporter, claiming she had a "scandals story regarding a billionaire CEO abusing working-class citizens."
Standing in the center of the crowded granite plaza, surrounded by hundreds of commuters leaving their office buildings, Marjorie began screaming at the top of her lungs:
"BRYNN CALLOWAY IS A FRAUD! BRYNN CALLOWAY IS AN ABUSER!"
People stopped to look. Cameras started coming out.
Derek stood beside his mother, looking nervous but allowing her to lead the charge, hoping the threat of public shame would force me into offering a multi-million-dollar settlement.
"My son married this woman yesterday thinking she was a humble, loving girl!" Marjorie shrieked, waving her arms wildly at the glass skyscraper. "Instead, she lied to him! She hid tens of millions of dollars! And when my son asked her to help out around the house on their wedding night, she threw a bucket of filthy chemical water over him, attacked him, and walked out! Look at my poor boy! She destroyed his business out of spite!"
A crowd of nearly two hundred commuters had gathered around them. Local news freelancers were filming on their phones, live-streaming the entire spectacle to social media platforms.
The headline on local X (formerly Twitter) streams immediately began trending: "Billionaire CEO Accused of Abandoning Working-Class Husband on Wedding Night."
Inside my thirty-fourth-floor office, Marcus ran in, looking worried.
"Ms. Calloway, your mother-in-law and Derek are causing a massive public disturbance outside the main entrance. The press is starting to gather. Should I call the riot police?"
I stood by the window, looking down at the tiny figures causing a scene in the plaza below.
"No, Marcus," I said calmly. "Do not call the police yet. Lower the main lobby projection screens and activate the plaza sound system."
"Ma'am?" Marcus asked, surprised.
"Marjorie wants a public performance," I said, stepping toward the private elevator. "It’s time to give the audience the full movie."
Two minutes later, the massive high-definition digital billboards surrounding the Northstar Ridge plaza—which usually displayed stock indices and corporate logos—suddenly went dark.
The crowd in the plaza went quiet, looking up at the four-story-tall screens.
Marjorie stopped screaming, a smug smile spreading across her face. "See?! She’s scared! She’s trying to cut off the noise!"
Then, a loud, crystal-clear audio signal clicked over the plaza's external surround sound speakers.
The screens flashed to life.
It was not a corporate statement. It was the raw, unedited, high-definition audio and video footage recorded from my phone during last night’s incident at 11:17 PM.
The four-story digital screens showed the interior of Marjorie’s bedroom doorway in high clarity.
You could hear Marjorie’s voice booming across the entire city block: "Pick up the bucket. You’re the woman of the house now. Serve your husband."
You could see Derek stepping into the frame in his pajama pants. You could hear him sneering: "Why do you always have to argue? Take the dress off and clean the vomit."
And then, in full, horrific detail, the crowd watched as Derek stepped forward, grabbed my hair, yanked my head back, and struck me full force across the face.
You could hear the loud, sickening crack of his hand hitting my cheek. You could see Marjorie standing in the background, folding her arms and smiling in approval.
The crowd in the plaza let out a massive, collective gasp of horror.
People turned their heads from the screen to look directly at Derek and Marjorie standing in the middle of the plaza.
The atmosphere transformed in an instant from curiosity to pure, violent indignation.
"HOLY SHIT!" a man in the crowd yelled. "HE HIT HER!"
"LOOK AT HIS MOTHER SMILING WHILE HE STRUCK HIS WIFE!" a woman screamed, pointing her finger at Marjorie. "THEY'RE MONSTERS!"
Derek’s face went completely drained of color. He looked up at the four-story screen showing his own face slapping his wife, then looked around at two hundred enraged citizens closing in around them.
"No... wait!" Derek stammered, raising his hands in terror. "That was edited! That was taken out of context!"
"Out of context?!" a woman in the crowd shouted, stepping forward and throwing her hot iced coffee directly onto Derek’s suit jacket. "YOU STRUCK A WOMAN ON YOUR WEDDING NIGHT!"
Marjorie tried to step in front of her son. "Stay back! You don't know the whole story! She was disrespecting me in my own home!"

"YOU ENCOURAGED HIM TO HIT HER!" an elder gentleman roared, throwing a half-eaten sandwich at Marjorie’s face, hitting her right on the nose.
Within seconds, the crowd erupted into absolute chaos. People began shouting, throwing trash, cups, and food at Derek and Marjorie, forcing them to retreat backward toward their car under a barrage of public rage.
