Chapter 8 - THE CHILD WHO KNEW THE TRUTH

Elizabeth's mother finally returned home.

But she was different.

Quiet.

Fragile.

She remembered almost everything.

Except one night.

The night of the fire.

“I remember your father calling someone,” she said.

“Who?”

“I don't know.”

“Try.”

Her mother closed her eyes.

“Daniel said, ‘You promised she would be safe.’”

“Who was he talking to?”

She whispered:

“Someone named Gabriel.”

Alessandro looked at Marcus.

“Gabriel who?”

There were dozens.

Then Elizabeth remembered.

Her father had once mentioned a man named Gabriel Cross.

A family attorney.

A man who had disappeared after the fire.

They tracked him to a small town in Michigan.

Gabriel was seventy-two.

When Alessandro showed him the ledger, Gabriel cried.

“I thought everyone was dead.”

“Who did you work for?”

Gabriel looked at Elizabeth.

“Your father.”

“Why did he trust you?”

“Because I helped him hide the evidence.”

“From Victoria?”

Gabriel shook his head.

“From Matteo.”

Alessandro stiffened.

“What?”

Gabriel explained.

Matteo had not ordered the murder.

But he had covered up Victoria's crimes to protect the Vitali name.

He had chosen reputation over justice.

That decision had allowed Victoria to continue.

Alessandro felt sick.

“My father knew.”

“Yes.”

“Then he betrayed Daniel.”

“Yes.”

Elizabeth understood.

Her father hadn't died simply because one person was evil.

He had died because too many powerful people chose silence.

That realization changed everything.

Alessandro decided to testify publicly.

It meant exposing his own family.

His own father.

His own empire.

The board threatened to remove him.

Investors panicked.

Shares dropped.

News channels called it the biggest corporate scandal in decades.

But Alessandro refused to retreat.

At the press conference, he stood beside Elizabeth.

“My family protected money when it should have protected people.”

He paused.

“I will not continue that tradition.”

The room went silent.

He announced that the Vitali Foundation would create a fund for families affected by corporate corruption.

Elizabeth would lead its medical education program.

And for the first time, she used her real name publicly.

“Elizabeth Hart.”

Reporters applauded.

She didn't feel ashamed anymore.

Later that night, she found Alessandro on the balcony.

“You gave up half your company.”

“I kept the part worth keeping.”

She smiled.

“What about the other half?”

He looked at her.

“We'll rebuild.”

Together.

Then Elizabeth's phone rang.

It was her mother.

“Lizzie?”

“Yes?”

“There is something else.”

“What?”

“I found your father's final letter.”

Elizabeth's smile disappeared.

“What does it say?”

Her mother hesitated.

“He wasn't protecting you from Victoria.”

May you like

“Then who?”

“He was protecting you from someone else.”
