Chapter 6 - ELENA WALKED INTO THE STORY HER GRANDMOTHER ERASED
Three days later, I met Elena Ruiz over video.
Six years old.
Missing one front tooth.
Long dark hair.
A serious little face.
She looked nothing like a scandal.
She looked like a child.
Selina’s aunt, Rosa, had raised her since infancy.
Selina visited irregularly.
Diego sent money when pressured.
Beatrice paid monthly support on one condition:
Elena never appeared at the Vance estate.
Rosa had saved every letter.
Every money order.
Every instruction.
One note from Beatrice read:
The family cannot absorb another complication, especially not a girl Diego cannot provide for.
I had to put the paper down.
All those years Beatrice acted as if my daughters had failed her.
She had also erased another granddaughter entirely.
Then came legal DNA testing.
Supervised.
Verified identification.
No home kit.
No switched swabs.
Results:
Diego Vance was Mateo’s biological father.
Probability:
99.999%.
He was also Elena’s biological father.
Arthur was excluded.
Mateo’s entire position as “Arthur’s son” disappeared.
The boy cried when they explained only the simplest version:
The adults had made a mistake about who his father was.
I insisted nobody use the word fraud around him.
Children should not carry adult crimes in their identities.
Arthur asked whether he could still see Mateo.
Selina refused at first.
Then reconsidered supervised contact.
Whatever else Arthur had done, he had spent almost a year believing he was the boy’s father.
Mateo loved him.
Biology could correct a lie without pretending affection had never existed.
Then Rosa told us another secret.
Beatrice had not discovered Elena after the child was born.
She knew during the pregnancy.
Diego had asked his mother for money.
Beatrice arranged the apartment where Selina stayed.
Paid medical bills.
Then offered Selina $40,000 after delivery if Rosa became Elena’s guardian.
Selina accepted.
I stared at the documents.
Beatrice’s obsession with male succession had not begun with Mateo.
She had already looked at Diego’s first child and decided a granddaughter was administratively inconvenient.
Then Rebecca called.
The company audit had found the payments.
They weren’t from Beatrice’s personal account.
Nearly $96,000 in support and hush money had been paid through Vance Fine Furniture.
Corporate funds.
