Chapter 10 - THE VIDEO ARTHUR SR. LEFT FOR THE GIRLS

Arthur Sr.’s video was never meant to become family entertainment.

But my daughters deserved to see it.

We watched in Boston.

He appeared in his workshop.

Saw dust behind him.

An unfinished walnut table at his side.

“I have made many mistakes,” he began.

“That is apparently a requirement for becoming old.”

Maya giggled.

Then he said:

“If my grandchildren are watching this because somebody has turned succession into a war, I apologize.”

Chloe leaned closer.

“I built furniture because my father did. Arthur joined because he wanted to. Diego didn’t. Mariana came along and taught us how to build a company instead of an expensive hobby.”

I covered my mouth.

He continued.

“No child owes this business their life.”

Then:

“And no granddaughter is worth less than a grandson.”

Cami began crying.

Not loudly.

Just tears.

Arthur Sr. looked straight at the camera.

“Beatrice disagrees with me about tradition.”

That was diplomatic.

“If she tells you Vance needs a man, remind her that half the furniture customers who kept us alive were women and the person who saved our payroll was Mariana.”

Even Chloe laughed.

Then the final part.

“The ring is a reminder to learn before you lead.”

He held it up.

“If none of my grandchildren want it, sell it and take a vacation.”

Maya shouted:

“I want the vacation!”

We laughed harder than we had in weeks.

That video did something the lawsuits couldn’t.

It returned proportion.

The ring was metal.

The company was a company.

Our children were people.

Then Melissa Carter, Vance Fine Furniture’s new interim CFO, called.

The audit had uncovered a separate account created after Arthur Sr.’s death.

VANCE HERITAGE STRATEGIES.

Controlled by Diego.

Beatrice had transferred $2.3 million of company funds into it under the description:

Succession planning.

The money had financed the attempted recapitalization.

Lawyers.

The fake Mateo paternity documentation.

Payments to Selina.

Even the celebration.

The party crowning Mateo had literally been paid for by a company partly owned by me.

Then came the larger discovery.

Diego planned to use Vance Heritage Strategies as the new investor in the recapitalization.

If I had not challenged the meeting, company money would effectively have been cycled through Diego’s entity to buy new shares in the company itself.

He was trying to acquire ownership with money already belonging to shareholders.

Including me.

Including Arthur Sr.’s grandchildren.

May you like

That was not succession.

It was extraction.
