Chapter 13 - The Hawthorne file
Matthew Hawthorne didn't run.
He didn't threaten us.
He met our attorneys and brought records.
That made him either cooperative or very confident.
His father David had participated in the Carter settlement.
But according to Matthew, David wasn't protecting Andrew.
He was protecting William Mercer.
Why?
Because William had authorized the forged transfer after Robert verbally agreed to leave Mercer Residential.
Robert later changed his mind.
The forged signature was used to force through an agreement William believed Robert had already accepted.
Still wrong.
Still potentially fraudulent.
But different from Andrew secretly stealing the company.
Then why did Rachel Carter's evidence implicate Andrew?
Because Andrew exploited the dispute afterward.
One original forgery created by William's side became a template for Andrew's later fraud.
Everyone inherited someone else's wrongdoing and expanded it.
Matthew showed us his father's private memorandum.
Robert Carter eventually learned the truth.
He could have sued.
Instead he accepted the $180,000 Carter settlement routed through Bellweather.
There.
That payment wasn't theft.
It was settlement money.
But Bellweather later remained active.
Andrew hijacked it.
So Claire had spent her final months separating old misconduct from new fraud.
Then Matthew revealed the largest secret.
Lily's investment account didn't contain stolen Mercer money.
It contained Robert Carter's settlement proceeds plus investment growth.
Claire placed it in Lily's name.
Legally.
Andrew had no claim.
William had no claim.
Nora had no claim.
The supposed fortune everyone was chasing belonged to my daughter.

$3.7 million.
I stared.
Lily was coloring at Rachel's house while adults tore each other apart over money that legally belonged to a six-year-old.
“Does Andrew know?”
“Yes.”
“Does Nora?”
Matthew looked at her.
Nora whispered:
“Yes.”
There.
She had known.
“How long?”
“Three months.”
“Why didn't you tell me?”
“Because my father wanted me to transfer it.”
“Could you?”
“No.”
“Then why was he pressuring you?”
“He thought Claire gave me a secondary authorization.”
“Did she?”
Nora shook her head.
“No.”
Then Matthew placed another document on the table.
Someone had attempted to create one.
Forged.
Submitted four days earlier.
The applicant claimed to be Lily's guardian.
Name:
Daniel Carter.
My name.
My signature.
Not mine.
The same pattern again.
Someone was trying to use my identity to access Lily's money.
Andrew?
He denied it.
Nora?
She denied it.
