Chapter 12 - Claire’s last drive

Andrew did not confess to killing Claire.
That distinction mattered.
His recorded confession concerned what happened immediately before her fatal crash.
He had confronted her.
Claire possessed Rachel Carter's evidence proving Andrew created the forged transfer and Bellweather accounts.
Andrew demanded it.
Claire refused.
They argued.
Andrew grabbed her handbag.
Claire took it back.
Then drove away.
Andrew followed.
Not to kill her, he claimed.
To continue the confrontation.
It was raining.
Claire accelerated.
Andrew stayed behind her.
At an intersection, Claire's car lost control and struck a barrier.
Andrew stopped.
He saw the wreck.
And left.
That was his confession.
He did call emergency services anonymously several minutes later.
But he fled because he feared the financial evidence in Claire's possession would expose him.
My hands shook listening to it.
Did Andrew cause the crash?
No evidence established contact between vehicles.
The original investigation found weather and speed were sufficient explanations.
But he chased my wife.
He frightened her.
Then abandoned her.
And spent four years hiding it.
Nora had found the recording in her father's files three months earlier.
She kept it from me.
“Why?”
“Because I knew you'd hate me.”
“You weren't driving.”
“He's my father.”
“That isn't the same thing.”
“I came into your life because of him!”
There.
Her real shame.
She believed every part of our relationship was contaminated by its beginning.
Maybe it was.
But concealing the recording made it worse.
Then I asked:
“Did you contaminate my tea because you thought I'd found it?”
“No.”
“Look at me.”
She did.
“No.”
I believed she was frightened.
I didn't yet know whether I believed her.
Then Lily came toward me.
“Daddy?”
I knelt.
“What?”
“Mommy had a recording too.”
My heart stopped.
“What recording?”
She pointed toward the silver key.
“The lady said the key opens two things.”
We had used it on the wall panel.
What was the second?
Eleanor knew.
Claire's safe-deposit box.
Not bank money.
Private archival storage.
Box 611.
Inside was a small recorder.
Claire's voice.
She described Andrew confronting her repeatedly.
Then she said:
If anything happens to me, Andrew isn't the only person afraid of these records.
I listened harder.
She named someone.
“Matthew Hawthorne.”
David Hawthorne's son.
Mercer Residential's current attorney.
A man who had remained quietly in the background of every discovery.
Claire continued:
“Matthew knows what his father did to Robert Carter.”

My father's forged transfer suddenly wasn't finished history.
The Hawthornes had been involved too.
