Chapter 5 - The Final Move and the Beginning of Forever

The takedown of the Moretti syndicate was a masterclass in corporate and underworld warfare.
Armed with the offshore financial records I had uncovered, Adrian didn't need to wage a bloody turf war at the docks. By midnight, federal indictments fueled by anonymous, ironclad whistleblower files—delivered straight from Vance-Kane security protocols—froze every single asset the Morettis owned. Their leaders were rounded up by federal agents before dawn, their empire collapsing like a house of cards without a single shot fired.
Two days later, the storm had completely cleared. The Manhattan office was quiet, bathed in the golden hues of an autumn sunset pouring through the massive glass windows.
I sat at my desk, finishing up the weekly schedule, when the door to Adrian’s private office swung open.
Adrian walked out, not wearing his usual forbidding corporate armor, but dressed in a simple black button-down shirt with the sleeves rolled up to his elbows. In his hand, he held two cups of coffee—and right beside him, skipping happily, was Noah.
"We come bearing peace offerings," Adrian announced, his deep voice carrying a warm, unfamiliar softness that made my heart race.
Noah hoisted a brown paper bag proudly into the air. "And donuts! Chocolate sprinkles, because you're awesome!"
I couldn't help the bright laugh that bubbled up from my chest. I stood up from my desk as they approached. "Well, if chocolate sprinkles are involved, I suppose I have no choice but to negotiate terms."
Noah grinned, handing me the bag before darting over to the sofa to grab his iPad and stuffed elephant. "I'll be in the fort!" he called out over his shoulder.
Once Noah was out of earshot, Adrian stopped right in front of me. The playful air between us shifted, replaced by a quiet, electric gravity. He placed the two cups of coffee on my desk, his fingers gently brushing against mine.
"I heard about what you did with the Moretti financial files," Adrian said, his gaze locked onto mine with fierce admiration. "You didn't just protect yourself, Elena. You secured our entire operation. You're far too dangerous to just be a secretary."
I looked up at him, feeling a courageous heat rise in my chest. "Good thing I never intended on staying just a secretary."
Adrian’s breath hitched. A slow, breathtaking smile spread across his face—the same smile his son had inherited. He reached into his pocket, but instead of a weapon or a key, he pulled out a small, velvet jeweler's box.
My breath caught in my throat.
Adrian opened the box, revealing a stunning, custom-designed diamond ring that caught the amber light of the setting sun.
"I spent seven years looking for you, Elena," Adrian said, his voice dropping into a low, earnest register that reached straight into my soul. "I built an empire, I protected my family, but every single day, the only thing missing was the girl from the Brooklyn bakery. I know my world is complicated, and I know my life comes with shadows. But I promise you, with every breath I have, I will spend the rest of my life making sure you never have to walk alone again."
He paused, looking down at me with absolute devotion.
"Noah was right about one thing. You are far too beautiful to be alone. Will you... will you be our mommy? Will you marry me?"
Tears pricked the corners of my eyes, but a radiant, unshakeable smile took over my face. I didn't hesitate for a single second.
"Yes, Adrian," I whispered. "Yes, I will."

From across the room, a loud cheer erupted as Noah tossed his iPad onto the cushions and threw his hands up in victory. "I knew it! Best plan ever!"
Adrian laughed, pulling me flush against his chest, capturing my lips in a deep, passionate kiss that swept away every shadow of the past and promised an unbreakable, beautiful future.
