Chapter 1 - The Unexpected Arrival

The heavy mahogany doors of the seventy-fifth-floor Manhattan penthouse offices were designed to intimidate anyone who crossed the threshold. For two years, I had walked through them every single morning as Adrian Kane’s personal secretary, mastering the art of remaining unseen, unfazed, and strictly professional. At thirty-three, I knew better than to let the brutal standards, the towering glass windows, or the terrifying reputation of the Kane crime family rattle me. Adrian Kane was a man who commanded entire underworld syndicates with a single, freezing glance of his gray-blue eyes. He was brilliant, controlled, impeccably tailored, and entirely immune to personal distractions.

Or so I had always believed.

That particular Tuesday morning shattered every rule of the corporate sanctuary before I even poured my first cup of coffee. My phone had buzzed aggressively at 5:45 AM. It was Adrian’s frantic nanny, babbling about a burst pipe flooding her Queens apartment building. At the same time, Adrian’s mother was stranded by severe weather in Atlanta, and the family friend who occasionally watched his six-year-old son was stuck in Denver.

There was no backup plan left. And Adrian Kane, head of the most powerful mafia organization in New York, could not cancel his morning strategy meetings with international associates.

When the private elevator pinged and the doors slid open at 8:00 AM sharp, Adrian stepped out holding the hand of a miniature version of himself. Six-year-old Noah Kane had his father's dark hair, the same sharp jawline, and eyes that missed absolutely nothing.

"You’re going to be invisible," I heard Adrian telling his son in a low, stern whisper as they approached my desk. "Like a ghost. A very quiet ghost."

Noah blinked up at him. "Can ghosts have crackers?"

"Yes."

"Can ghosts watch cartoons?"

"With headphones."

Noah studied his father with a mischievous glint in his eye. "Can ghosts talk to your pretty secretary?"

Adrian went completely still. His jaw tightened. "No."

The little smirk Noah tried to hide should have warned both of us that catastrophe was inevitable. By 8:35, Noah was tucked securely into the corner of Adrian’s private Manhattan office with coloring books, an iPad, Goldfish crackers, two juice boxes, and Gerald, his battered stuffed elephant. For over an hour, he behaved so impeccably that I actually believed we might survive the workday without a single casualty.

Then, one of Adrian’s senior enforcers hurried toward my desk with urgent news. "The emergency summit got moved up. Mr. Kane wants everyone in the conference room in ten minutes."

I rushed into Adrian’s office to brief him. Before leaving, Adrian crouched down beside Noah, his expression softening just a fraction—the only vulnerability he ever allowed the world to see.

"Stay here," Adrian warned softly. "No wandering, no looking for me, and absolutely no adventures."

"What if adventure finds me?" Noah asked innocently.

"It won't," Adrian replied flatly.

The strategy meeting lasted eighteen agonizing minutes. I sat right beside Adrian, taking rapid, meticulous notes while the heads of various syndicate factions bickered across the table. But the moment the meeting adjourned and we stepped back out into the main executive hallway, a cold knot formed in my stomach.

The door to Adrian’s office was cracked open.

Noah was gone.

Adrian’s expression morphed instantly from calm authority into terrifying, razor-sharp predator mode. We split up to search the sprawling offices, my heart hammering against my ribs as I checked supply closets and empty boardrooms. Just as panic threatened to overwhelm me, I heard small, cheerful footsteps padding down the thick hallway carpet behind me.

"Dad! I found her!" a child’s bright voice chimed out.

I spun around. Noah stood directly in front of me, looking up with an enormous, triumphant grin. Several yards away, Adrian froze in his tracks, his breath catching in his throat.

Then Noah pointed a small finger straight at my chest, dropping a bomb that detonated the entire atmosphere.

"You’re too beautiful to be alone," Noah announced loudly, staring at me as if he’d just solved the universe's greatest mystery. "I think you should be my mommy."

Every single person in the hallway froze. Secretaries stopped typing, security guards locked their posture, and the air drained completely out of the corridor.

Heat flooded my face, scorching my cheeks red. "Noah!" I gasped, mortified beyond belief.

Noah just grinned wider. "See, Dad? I told you she was pretty."

For one horrifying, endless second, nobody moved. Then Adrian Kane—a man who could silence hardened criminals with a single glare—threw his head back and let out a deep, helpless, echoing laugh. It was a sound I had never heard from him before, rich and genuinely amused, which somehow made the terrifying situation a thousand times worse.

Slowly, Adrian walked toward us. His usual cold composure returned, but something deeply unfamiliar and intense flickered in those gray-blue eyes as they settled on me.

Then he looked down at his son.

May you like

"Noah," Adrian asked quietly, his voice dangerously low, "why exactly do you think she should be your mommy?"

Noah’s playful smile vanished. He glanced up at me, then back down at the polished floor, and suddenly the cheerful six-year-old looked painfully, heartbreakingly serious. And when he opened his mouth to answer, Adrian’s face went completely, horrifically pale.
