Chapter 5 - The Masterpiece

We walked through the silent, dimly lit halls of the mansion, heading toward the small, cozy brick cottage located near the south garden wall where Grace and Mia lived.

The rain had stopped, leaving the night sky filled with a million brilliant, cold stars.

Grace unlocked the front door of the cottage. The air inside smelled of sweet vanilla, baby powder, and fresh laundry—a stark, comforting contrast to the cold, sterile smell of leather and gunsmoke that filled my mansion.

We walked into the small bedroom at the end of the hall.

Mia was fast asleep in her small bed, tucked under a bright pink comforter decorated with cartoon horses. Her brown curls were spread across the white pillow, her small chest rising and falling in deep, peaceful breath.

Grace quietly knelt beside the bed, pulled out a plastic pink toy box from beneath the frame, and reached inside.

She pulled out a thick, leather-bound book.

It was roughly six by eight inches, wrapped in cracked black calfskin, featuring two heavy brass clasps on the right edge.

Grace handed the book to me with trembling hands.

I took the book carefully, feeling the immense historical weight of it. I opened the brass clasps with a soft click and turned the first page.

Printed on the thick parchment in fine, black copperplate ink were encrypted offshore bank account numbers, secret trust keys, and wire routing codes worth tens of millions of dollars.

And right over the top of the secret Panama bank account codes...

Was a massive, bright yellow sun drawn in heavy wax crayon.

I turned to the next page.

Over a list of corrupt municipal officials and dock inspectors in Boston... Mia had drawn a large, smiling purple cat with six legs and misaligned eyes.

I turned to the page after that.

On the final page, where the master signature codes for the Moretti family's central vault were listed... was the drawing I had seen three weeks ago by the lake.

The drawing of me.

The man in the dark vest, sitting straight-backed by the dark water, surrounded by wild, colorful flowers that leaned in close to touch his feet, under a giant sun that gave warmth to the entire page.

Mia had drawn her mother beside the man, holding a small heart in her hand, and herself standing between them, holding both of their hands.

Tears filled my eyes—real, hot tears that I hadn't felt since I was a child.

The book that was meant to be an instrument of blackmail, destruction, and greed had been completely erased and transformed by the innocent crayons of a child who saw only warmth, safety, and love in a world full of monsters.

"It's... it's ruined, isn't it?" Grace whispered nervously, watching my face. "The records... she ruined them."

I looked up from the book, looking at Grace's beautiful, anxious face, and then down at little Mia sleeping peacefully in her bed.

"No, Grace," I whispered, my voice thick with emotion as I closed the brass clasps. "She didn't ruin it. She fixed it."

At that moment, I knew my life as a crime boss was over. I didn't want to live in the shadows anymore. I didn't want people to lower their eyes when I entered a room. I wanted to live in the light that this four-year-old girl had drawn for me.

I looked at Grace, stepping close to her in the quiet room. "Grace... tomorrow morning, everything changes."

May you like

"What are you going to do?" she asked softly.

"I'm going to tear down the old Moretti family," I declared firmly. "And build something worthy of this drawing."
