Chapter 3 - The Betrayal in the Dark

The lower service garage sat three hundred yards north of the main mansion, carved directly into the limestone hillside. It was where the estate's heavy utility vehicles, maintenance gear, and localized network servers were housed.
The cold rain stung my face as I sprinted across the dark lawn, flanked by Frank and two of my most trusted security operatives.
The heavy steel roll-up door of the garage was open three feet from the concrete floor. Bright yellow light spilled out onto the wet asphalt, accompanied by the low, mechanical hum of heavy server drives being unmounted.
We approached the side pedestrian entrance. Frank raised his weapon, giving me a silent three-finger countdown before kicking the door open.
"Nobody move!" Frank roared, stepping into the space with his weapon raised.
Inside, three men in dark raincoats froze. They were holding heavy industrial drill bits and magnetic wiping devices, positioned in front of the open server rack that stored all physical transaction logs for Moretti Logistics from 2020 to 2025.
Standing in the center of the garage, holding a sleek silver laptop and a leather briefcase, was Marco Rossi.
Marco didn't look surprised. He slowly closed the laptop, a bitter, cynical smile spreading across his face as he looked at me.
"I knew you'd come down yourself, Gabriel," Marco said softly, his voice echoing off the concrete walls. "You always were hands-on when it came to your property."
I stepped past Frank, my weapon held casually at my side, my eyes locked onto the man I had called a brother for thirty years.
"Why, Marco?" I asked quietly. "I gave you thirty percent of Moretti Logistics. I gave you mansions in the Hamptons, boats in Florida, and a seat at every table I ever sat at. You had everything."
"I had what you allowed me to have, Gabriel!" Marco snapped, his eyes flashing with sudden, raw venom. "There's a difference! Every time we walked into a room, every time a deal was signed, people looked at you. You were the Don. You were the brilliant Gabriel Moretti. I was just the shadow standing behind you holding your coffee!"
"So you stole forty-eight million dollars?" I asked coldly.
"Forty-eight million was just the deposit," Marco sneered. "Blackwood Capital and the Federal Prosecutor's Office offered me complete immunity and ninety million dollars if I delivered the physical master encryption ledger—the one document that proves Moretti Logistics is the primary clearinghouse for the entire East Coast Syndicate."
I narrowed my eyes. "The master ledger was destroyed five years ago."
"Don't lie to me, Gabriel!" Marco shouted, taking a step forward, his voice rising in desperate anger. "I know how you operate! You never destroy evidence that keeps your captains in line! You kept the physical paper ledger—the black micro-ledger with the brass clasps! You hid it somewhere on this estate!"
I stared at him in genuine confusion. "Marco... you're losing your mind. There is no physical micro-ledger."
"Search him!" Marco ordered his three men, pointing at me. "The ledger is on this property! I know it is!"
Before his men could react, Frank and my operatives opened fire with silenced sidearms.
The three thugs dropped to the concrete floor instantly, their weapons clattering harmlessly against the stone.
Marco gasped in terror, dropping his silver laptop as he backed up against the server rack, his face pale, his hands raised in surrender.
"Gabriel... please!" Marco stammered, his bravado instantly evaporating as he looked into my cold, unforgiving eyes. "We... we were boys together! My father worked for your father! You can't kill me!"
I walked up to him, stopping inches from his face. The smell of gunsmoke and wet wool hung thick in the air.
"You're right, Marco," I whispered, my voice dripping with icy contempt. "We were boys together. That's why I'm not going to shoot you in this garage like a dog."
I looked at Frank. "Lock him in the wine cellar beneath the main house. Strip him of his phone, his keys, and his shoes. Tomorrow morning at sunrise, the Syndicate council will assemble in the west hall to judge his treason."
"No! Gabriel, don't leave me with the council!" Marco begged, screaming as Frank pulled his arms behind his back and slapped heavy steel handcuffs onto his wrists. "They'll skin me alive! Gabriel!"
I turned my back on his screams and walked out into the cold rain.
The victory felt hollow. My oldest friend had sold me out for money and jealousy. The foundation of my life had been proven to be a lie built on greed.
As I walked up the hill toward the dark mansion, I looked up at the second-floor study window.
