Chapter 4 - The Threat in the Dark

A rival syndicate family—the Luciano organization—had been pushing against Moretti territory ever since the death of Rico’s wife. They viewed Rico’s grief as a sign of weakness.
When word reached Don Luciano that Rico had brought a young, unknown woman into his inner sanctuary to care for his heir, Luciano saw an opportunity.
On a rainy Thursday afternoon, while Rico was attending a high-level commission meeting in Manhattan, three dark SUVs bypassed the estate's outer road.
Clara was in the garden house with Leo, picking fresh strawberries, when the estate alarms suddenly blared.
BOOM.
Explosions echoed near the front gates. The sound of heavy automatic gunfire shattered the quiet afternoon.
Clara’s blood ran cold. She didn't hesitate for a single second. She grabbed Leo, lifting him into her arms, and sprinted through the side entrance of the house toward the reinforced panic room behind the library.
Before she could reach the library door, two armed men in tactical gear burst through the glass conservatory doors.
"There's the girl!" one of them shouted, raising his weapon. "Grab the kid!"
Panic seized Clara, but her motherly instinct turned into pure iron. She kicked a heavy mahogany side table into the path of the first man, sending him crashing to the floor, and darted into the library, slamming the thick oak door shut and sliding the heavy iron bolt into place.
Leo began to cry, trembling against her chest.
"Shh, baby, I'm here," Clara whispered frantically, kissing his forehead as she rushed toward the hidden steel door behind the bookcase. "Clara’s got you. You are safe."
Outside the door, heavy boots kicked against the oak wood. CRACK. CRACK.
May you like
Clara shoved Leo inside the small, dark panic room, locking the heavy steel door from the inside just as the outer wood gave way.
Sitting in the dim emergency light of the bunker, holding the crying boy tightly against her heart, Clara closed her eyes and prayed for the first time in years—not for herself, but for the man who was currently burning up the highway to get back to them.
