Chapter 2 - The Ultrasound Shockwave

The air inside the VIP suite of the St. Jude Women’s Clinic was thick with perfume, champagne-scented breath, and suffocating anticipation.
Preston Hale strode into the room like a conqueror entering a captured city. Trailing behind him was the entire Hale clan: his mother, Evelyn, draped in her signature pearls and cashmere; his father, Arthur, holding a cigar he was eager to light the moment they stepped outside; and his sister, Chloe, already recording a video on her phone for social media.
In the center of the room, reclined on the plush leather examination table, was Brielle Foster. She wore a soft pink sweater, her blonde hair arranged in effortless waves, her hand resting delicately over her stomach.
"Look at our golden girl," Evelyn gushing, her heels clicking on the hardwood floor as she rushed to Brielle’s side, completely ignoring the sterile boundaries of the exam room. "Finally, a real Hale is on the way. A boy to carry the family legacy. Not another disappointment."
"Mother, please," Preston said, though his grin revealed he agreed with every word. He walked over, pressed a kiss to Brielle’s forehead, and took her hand. "How is my son doing?"
"He’s waiting for his dad," Brielle purred, her eyes glittering with victory. She glanced at the door, as if half-expecting Lena to burst in and cause a scene. When she saw only the Hales, her smile widened. "Is it really over, Preston? Are you finally free?"
"Signed, sealed, and delivered," Preston declared loudly, loud enough for the medical staff outside the door to hear. "Lena picked up the girls and left without a fight. She knew she had no leverage left. Now, everything belongs to us. To our son."
"Good riddance," Arthur growled from the corner, checking his gold watch. "That woman had no fire in her. Eleven years and all she gave us were two quiet little girls. No business instinct, no male heir. Preston, you should have cut her loose five years ago."
The door opened, interrupting Arthur’s tirade. Dr. Sarah Vance, a veteran obstetrician with thirty years of experience and an unreadable face, walked in carrying a digital tablet. Behind her, a ultrasound technician rolled the high-resolution monitor into place.
"Good morning, everyone," Dr. Vance said, her voice crisp and devoid of the theatrical excitement currently filling the room. "I see the whole family is here."
"Of course we are!" Evelyn declared proudly. "We’re here to see the future of Hale Enterprises. Doctor, please make it quick. We have a celebration lunch booked at the country club at noon."
Dr. Vance offered a polite, professional smile that didn't reach her eyes. "Let’s take a look."
Brielle squeezed Preston’s hand as the technician applied the clear gel to her abdomen. The monitor flickered to life, displaying dark, grey-and-white static before resolving into the distinct shape of a developing fetus inside the amniotic sac.
"There he is!" Chloe squealed, raising her phone closer to the screen. "Oh my god, look at his head! He’s going to be so handsome!"
"Look at those limbs," Preston breathed, his heart pounding with an overwhelming sense of pride. This was it. The moment he proved to his father, to the board, and to himself that he was a man of legacy. He had traded an aging, quiet wife for a young, vibrant woman who delivered exactly what he demanded.
The ultrasound technician moved the transducer wand across Brielle’s belly. But as the image focused, the technician’s hand slowed down. She zoomed in on the fetus’s femur bone, clicked a few measurements, and then paused.
The technician looked up at Dr. Vance and whispered something softly.
Dr. Vance stepped closer, taking the wand from the technician’s hand. She adjusted the contrast on the screen, her eyes scanning the digital readouts on the side margin. The room, previously buzzing with loud chatter, began to settle into a curious hush.
"Is everything okay, Doctor?" Brielle asked, her voice suddenly losing its soft, sweet pitch. A flicker of tension crossed her brow.
"Just taking some precise measurements, Miss Foster," Dr. Vance replied smoothly. She moved the wand to the side, checking the blood flow through the umbilical cord, then looked down at the medical tablet sitting on her tray.
Dr. Vance swiped through several pages of digital records, her eyebrows drawing closer together.
"Doctor?" Preston stepped forward, his smile faltering slightly. "You can confirm it’s a boy, right? The private blood test we did at eight weeks said male."
Dr. Vance did not answer immediately. She leaned over the monitor, zoomed in on the fetal anatomy, and then turned off the sound of the heartbeat monitor, leaving the room in total silence.
She turned to face the room. Her eyes swept over Evelyn’s pristine pearls, Arthur’s smug posture, and finally rested on Preston’s eager, impatient face.
"Mr. Hale," Dr. Vance began, her tone steady and strangely solemn. "Before we discuss the gender of the baby, I need to verify a critical entry in your family’s medical file."
"My file?" Preston blinked, confused. "What does my file have to do with this scan?"
Dr. Vance looked back down at her tablet. "According to the hospital’s unified health database, you were admitted to St. Jude’s Surgical Center fourteen months ago for a micro-surgical vasectomy, followed by a double-check semen analysis eight months ago that confirmed a total absence of sperm. A zero count."
The room went so quiet that the faint hum of the air conditioner sounded like a jet engine.
Evelyn dropped her phone. It clattered against the hard floor.
Preston felt the blood drain from his head so fast he almost stumbled backward. "What... what are you talking about? I never had a vasectomy!"
Dr. Vance frowned, turning the tablet toward him. "Mr. Preston Hale, born March 14th, social security ending in 4092. The procedure was performed right here by Dr. Robert Chen. Furthermore..." She paused, looking directly at Brielle. "...the crown-to-rump measurement of this fetus puts the gestational age at twenty-six weeks. Six and a half months."
Dr. Vance paused, her gaze cold and piercing as she looked at Preston.
"Mr. Hale, according to your divorce filings, you met Miss Foster four months ago. And according to your medical record, you are completely sterile."

Dr. Vance looked over the top of her glasses, asking the single question that shattered the entire room into pieces:
"So, Mr. Hale... whose baby are we looking at?"
