Chapter 6 - Shadows and Sacrifices

Three weeks later, the transformation of the DeLuca estate was complete.

The heavy steel shutters were kept open during the day, allowing warm sunlight to flood the marble halls. Bright flowers filled the vases in the grand foyer. Laughter—real, joyful, bell-like laughter—echoed from the gardens daily.

Willow had moved from being a simple employee to the undisputed soul of the house.

She managed Mia’s schooling, organized family dinners, and brought a soft, human warmth to the dark world of Josiah DeLuca. And between Josiah and Willow, a powerful, unspoken tension was growing into a blazing fire.

They caught each other looking across roomfuls of people. They shared quiet late-night conversations in the library over glasses of bourbon. Every touch—a lingering hand on a shoulder, a brushed arm in the hallway—felt like electricity.

But danger in Josiah’s world was never truly gone. It merely waited in the shadows.

On a rainy Thursday evening, Josiah was stuck in downtown negotiations with city officials. Willow was in the grand library, helping Mia finish a puzzle, when the estate lights suddenly flickered and died.

The emergency backup generators failed to kick in.

Willow stood up instantly, her heart sinking. “Marcus?” she called into her intercom.

Static hissed through the speaker. “Miss Willow! Emergency! The perimeter gate was breached—they cut the main power lines! Get Mia to the—”

The audio cut out with a violent smash.

The heavy glass windows of the library shattered inward as three men in dark tactical gear burst into the room.

Mia screamed, hiding beneath the heavy mahogany desk.

Willow didn't panic. Instinct took over. She grabbed a heavy brass floor lamp, swinging it with all her strength at the first intruder. The heavy metal base struck the man across the helmet, sending him crashing into a bookshelf.

“Get the girl!” the second intruder barked, stepping over his fallen comrade and pulling a combat knife.

Willow threw herself in front of the desk, shielding Mia with her body. “Touch her and I'll kill you!”

The man sneered, reaching out with a gloved hand to throw Willow aside.

Willow fought like a lioness, scratching, kicking, and biting. But the man was twice her size. He grabbed her by the shoulder, throwing her violently against the marble fireplace.

Willow’s head struck the stone mantle, and pain exploded behind her eyes. She slumped to the floor, her vision swimming, blood dripping from her hairline.

“Willow!” Mia shrieked in absolute terror, crawling out from under the desk to throw her small body over Willow’s bleeding form. “Don't touch her! Don't touch my Willow!”

The intruder grabbed Mia by her arm, dragging her away.

“LET HER GO!”

A voice like thunder roared through the shattered room.

Josiah stood in the doorway. He didn't look like a man—he looked like an angry god of vengeance. His suit coat was gone, his tie torn away, his face twisted in pure, unadulterated fury.

Before the intruders could even raise their weapons, Josiah unleashed hell.

He fired three rapid shots. The two mercenaries dropped instantly. Josiah didn't stop. He vaulted over the desk, catching the third man—the one who had struck Willow—by the throat, slamming him into the wall with such force the stone cracked.

“You laid hands on my family,” Josiah growled, his dark eyes glowing with lethal insanity.

He broke the man's arm with a terrifying SNAP, then tossed his unconscious body out the shattered window into the rain like garbage.

The room fell silent except for the heavy sound of Josiah’s ragged breathing.

“Willow...” Mia was sobbing, clutching Willow’s hand. “Daddy, help her! She’s bleeding!”

Josiah dropped to his knees beside Willow. The terrifying rage in his face vanished, replaced by an agonizing, frantic terror.

He scooped her pale body into his lap, pressing his large hand against the wound on her head, his fingers trembling wildly.

“Willow... open your eyes. Look at me, sweetheart, please,” Josiah begged, his voice cracking. “Stay with me. Don't leave us. Please.”

Willow weakly lifted her hand, her thumb gently touching his cheek, leaving a smear of red against his sharp jaw.

“Mia... is she... safe?” Willow whispered weakly.

“She’s safe,” Josiah choked out, tears finally breaking past his defenses, streaming down his face as he kissed her bloody forehead. “You saved her. You saved us both. Now let me save you.”
