Chapter 5 - The Unraveling

By 5:00 a.m., the storm had passed, leaving behind a crisp, silent dawn over the Hudson River.
Federal agents and private legal teams cleared the estate grounds. Patrick Rourke and his top lieutenants were led away in heavy steel handcuffs, facing charges that would ensure they spent the remainder of their lives in federal penitentiaries.
The Bellandi estate was quiet once more.
In the master bedroom suite on the third floor, soft morning light filtered through the velvet curtains.
I lay in the center of the massive king-sized bed, propped up against silk pillows. The IV drip had been removed. Dr. Vance had confirmed that my contractions had stopped completely; Isabel was safe, healthy, and stable.
The door opened softly.
Roman stepped into the room. He had showered, changed into a clean dark sweater, and washed the soot and blood from his hands. But his face still carried the deep, painful weight of the night's revelations.
He walked over to the bed, stopping at the edge, looking down at me like a man awaiting judgment before a court.
"The Rourke coalition is dismantled," Roman said quietly. "Thomas Calder signed an exclusive lifetime freight agreement with us two hours ago. The Commission has officially confirmed my undisputed leadership over the entire region."
"Congratulations, Don Bellandi," I said, my voice flat, empty of emotion. "You won your war."
Roman closed his eyes, a look of profound physical pain crossing his features. He didn't speak for a long time. He walked to the window, staring out at the snow-covered garden below.
"I didn't win anything, Cass," he whispered, his voice cracking slightly. "I sat in this house for nine years believing that my primary duty as a man was to build a fortress so strong that no enemy could ever touch my family. I thought power was the only currency that mattered."
He turned back to face me, tears shining in his gray eyes.
"But last night, when you put that ring in Alessia's hand... when you drew that line through Isabel's name... I realized my fortress was already empty. I had driven away the only person who made this house a home."
He walked over to the bed, slowly dropping onto both knees beside me, resting his forehead against the edge of the mattress near my hip.
"I am so sorry, Cassandra," the powerful mafia boss sobbed quietly, his broad shoulders shaking. "I am so sorry for making you feel alone. I am so sorry for using our baby. Please... don't leave me."
I looked down at his dark head, at the strong, powerful man who had ruled an empire with an iron fist, now kneeling in complete, absolute humility before me.
I reached out my hand. My fingers gently touched his dark hair.
"I won't leave you, Roman," I whispered softly.
Roman lifted his head, staring at me with desperate, unbelieving hope.
"But the old Bellandi empire dies today," I said firmly, looking straight into his soul. "No more secrets. No more fake trusts. No more using our family as bargaining chips in your wars. If you want to be my husband, and if you want to be Isabel's father... you step out of the shadows. Forever."

Roman took my hand, pressing his lips passionately against my ring finger, kissing the Tiffany diamond he had given me nine years ago.
"I swear it, Cassandra," Roman promised, tears streaming down his face. "On my life, on my soul, on our daughter... I am yours. Entirely."
